• The phone rang for a short while before Iris answered drowsily. She had already fallen asleep; she did not expect to receive a call from Otis at this time of the night. “Hello? What’s wrong, Uncle Otis? It’s so late. Couldn’t you let me sleep for a while longer?”
• “Iris, I have something to speak with you about. Are you in your own room? Or, are you with Alice?”
• If Otis were honest with himself, he did not want to let Alice know about this matter even if she was his biological daughter. It was better if he could keep this from her, especially since she and Lucas would be part of the same family from now on.
