Chapter 7 Ignore Her Nonsense
- Mike squatted down, comforting her gently, "Honey, don't cry. These rough days will pass, I promise. I'll make sure to give you a bright and happy future. Just trust me."
- Suddenly, Luna stopped crying and looked at him. She was about to say something when Frank chimed in, sounding annoyed, "Don't buy into this guy's sweet talk. What else has he done besides making empty promises? He said he'd get me the iPhone XR when it came out, but now the iPhone 12 has come out, and I'm still waiting. So, take what he says with a grain of salt. He can't make you happy."
- "I can," Mike assured.
- Frank rolled his eyes. "Right now, the only happiness my sister and I have is having food on the table. Quit the talk and get us some grub, now!"
- "Okay, I'll whip up something for you and your sister."
- Mike got up to head to the kitchen.
- Shortly after, five steaming plates of egg-fried rice were ready.
- "Frank, take two plates in for Mom and Dad," Mike whispered to his brother-in-law. Even though they didn't treat him well, they were still his in-laws. He couldn't let them go hungry.
- "You've got a heart after all, making something for my parents," murmured Frank.
- He carried two plates of fried rice to his parents' room.
- "Honey, why'd you clean up? What if you cut yourself?"
- When he saw the mess already tidied up and dumped in the trash bag, Mike couldn't help but feel a tad touched.
- Despite her grudge against him, his wife could still be surprisingly nice sometimes.
- Munching on her fried rice, Luna sighed. "That's the last time I'm doing something for you. Let's go get that divorce tomorrow."
- Frank gave a big thumbs-up, completely agreeing.
- Smiling, Mike asked, "Why suddenly talk about divorce again?"
- Luna looked at him seriously. "Hannah received so many betrothal gifts, all thanks to being engaged to the Nation's Protector. It's like she's reached the pinnacle of success. Mom will never get over it. If I don't divorce you, I'll be putting you in danger. Sooner or later, Mom might kill you."
- The recent close call with the kitchen knife had deeply shaken her. If it led to a tragedy, their family would be ruined.
- Mike smiled. "If the engagement gift wasn't for Hannah, and Mom didn't envy Hannah, would you still divorce me?"
- Luna pondered for a few seconds and said, "Let's talk about it after this Saturday. If Nation's Protector marries Hannah, then we'll divorce. If the engagement gift was given to the wrong person, and it's taken back, and Mom has nothing to envy about, then we won't divorce."
- Although she said this, she still felt that the possibility of it being given to the wrong person was very small, most likely it was given to Hannah.
- "Okay."
- Mike nodded with a smile.
- At first, he wanted to tell Hannah that Nation's Protector was going to marry Luna, not someone like her!
- But he changed his mind.
- Because of Hannah's delusions, he got scolded, and his wife got slapped. It couldn't just end like this. He decided to let Hannah's family go crazy first, spend their betrothal gifts, and then announce on Saturday that Nation's Protector was marrying Luna. He wanted to see the expression on Hannah's family's faces.
- So, he decided to endure it for three days before saying anything.
- …
- Early the next morning, as Tony was going to the Petersons' mansion to deliver the engagement gifts, there was a need for grandeur, so he called Luna's family to gather together, and naturally, Mike was called by his mother-in-law to do some heavy lifting.
- When they arrived at the old Winters' mansion, 180 kilograms of gold, 1.33 million in cash, and several pieces of jewellery were already placed there.
- Gwen saw Lana's family come and deliberately said arrogantly, "Will delivering these betrothal gifts to the Petersons' mansion be particularly prestigious? What do you think? Will Mr. Peterson, knowing that I am the mother-in-law of Nation's Protector, give back double the engagement gifts as a dowry for Tony?"
- "Definitely. Mr. Peterson might even give back three or four times for the dowry. After all, he isn't short of money. What they want is a face. To have a daughter marry the brother-in-law of Nation's Protector, and to become relatives with Nation's Protector, that's such an honour!" Mia flattered.
- "Haha!"
- Gwen laughed so hard that she nearly fell backwards.
- Lana's face turned sour with envy and jealousy.
- Mike couldn't help but laugh as he asked, "Aunt Gwen, who is the engagement gift intended for? They haven't said yet. You took the liberty of spending it. If it's not intended for Hannah, what will you do?"
- "Why wouldn't it be for me?" Hannah retorted. "There are only three girls in the family. Helena is underage, Luna is already married, and I'm still single. If it's not for me, should it be for your wife? Does she deserve it?"
- "That's right." Gwen glared. "It's understandable to be envious, but I won't allow you to doubt the love of Nation's Protector for Hannah. If you dare to doubt it again, I'll use gold bars to crush you!"
- Mike shook his head with a smile. He had seen shameless people before, but he had never seen such shameless mother and daughter. He had to admit that Hannah and Gwen had impressed him.
- Lana snapped, "I called you here to help with the heavy lifting, not to question Hannah. Shut it and don't piss off Hannah and your Aunt Gwen, or I'll chop you up!"
- "Haha!"
- Everyone burst into laughter.
- At that moment, Tony swaggered in from outside, tossing his stylish hair and asking, "Mom, Hannah, how's my hair? Looking good, huh?"
- "Super cool. Awesome. Almost as cool as Nation's Protector," Lana said with a grin.
- Tony burst into laughter. "Aunt Lana, you're flattering me. I can't even hold a candle to Nation's Protector, but I can outshine your useless son-in-law."
- "Yeah, that's right." Lana chuckled.
- Tony gestured towards the engagement gifts. "Let's get these onto the car. This is your chance to butter up my family, so let's make the most of it."
- "Definitely!"
- Lana and Anton nodded in agreement, then urged Mike, Luna, and Frank to help with moving the betrothal gifts.
- "Honey, Frank, I'll handle the gold, you guys take care of the cash," Mike said.
- Then, he easily lifted the 180 kilograms of gold onto the car in two trips.
- Soon, a Lamborghini, a Ferrari, and several other cars left the Winters' old mansion, heading straight for the Petersons' mansion.
- As the eighteen gold bars and 1.33 million in cash were carried into the Petersons' mansion, Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, along with their daughter Tina, exchanged puzzled glances.
- "Tony, what's all this about?" Tina asked.
- Tony smirked. "Tina, you know I have feelings for you, so I brought 180 kilograms of gold and 1.33 million in cash to marry you."
- Tina scoffed. "There's no shortage of rich guys who want to marry me. Any one of them could bring this much in gifts. Sorry, I'm not interested. Take your stuff and go."
- "Uh … "
- Tony looked awkward.
- Hannah chimed in in irritation, "Tina, don't be shameless. Let me tell you, Nation's Protector intends to marry me and has offered a betrothal gift of 78 million dollars. My brother is Nation's Protector's brother-in-law. Marrying you is a sign of respect for me. So, be a bit more tactful. Otherwise, you might end up begging my brother to marry you, and I won't let him do it!"
- "What?!"
- The Peterson family members were shocked.
- "Is what you're saying true? Nation's Protector is offering you engagement gifts of 78 million dollars to marry you?" Harold Peterson couldn't believe it.
- "Dad, don't buy into her nonsense. Look at her, she's nowhere near as pretty as me. And come on, Nation's Protector, he's like a legend. Why would he even think about marrying someone like her?" Tina scoffed at Hannah.
