Chapter 6 Future Wife

  • Author's POV
  • Danny spent time alone with Rebecca at a small restaurant on the edge of town. The soft sunlight filtered through the window, providing a cozy warmth that afternoon. Amidst the serene atmosphere, Rebecca suddenly felt something was different about Danny.
  • Rebecca looked at Danny, trying to figure out what was going on in his mind. “Are you daydreaming?”
  • “No, not really.” Danny answered quickly. His smile looked forced, and his eyes avoided Rebecca's gaze.
  • Rebecca frowned, unconvinced. “Aren't you happy that I invited you to have lunch here?” She pointed at their surroundings, the simple restaurant they usually went to.
  • “I'm happy, darling.” Danny tried to reassure her, but his voice sounded doubtful. He tried to smile, but his smile didn't reach his eyes.
  • Rebecca felt increasingly worried. “If you're happy, why are you daydreaming?” she asked again, not wanting to give up.
  • Danny was silent for a moment, searching for the right words. “My wife, I mean my ex-wife, stopped by my neighbor's house earlier.”
  • "What if she came there? Do you still care?" Rebecca asked, trying to understand what was going on in Danny's mind.
  • “Of course not, darling.” Danny answered quickly, too quickly. He was trying to show indifference, but Rebecca could see something else behind his troubled eyes.
  • “So, if not, why are you still talking about her?” Rebecca asked again, trying to encourage Danny to speak further.
  • Danny sighed, looking heavy. "I'm just curious why she came there, and also about how she had the money to pay for all the food to be donated. I heard it was up to five thousand dollars."
  • "That's a small amount of money, Danny,” Rebecca tried to calm Danny down, her voice low but firm. “Besides, if it's only five thousand dollars, he could have just paid someone to take care of it.”
  • Danny furrowed his brow at this. He said they didn't need to talk about it anymore.
  • Suddenly, Rebecca whined. “If you're still thinking about your wife, I don't want to see you anymore!”
  • Danny was surprised, looking at Rebecca closely. "Don't be angry, Rebecca. I'm just confused about Naomi," he tried to explain.
  • Rebecca took a deep breath before finally speaking again. "Okay, I won't get mad. But, I want you to introduce me to your mom."
  • “What?” Danny looked surprised by Rebecca's request.
  • A heavy silence filled the space between them.
  • "You and I have come this far. Don't you want to introduce me to your mom?" Rebecca protested. Her eyes looked at Danny sharply, demanding an answer.
  • "But I'm not officially separated from Naomi yet. What will people say if I bring you?" Danny tried to come up with an excuse.
  • “So, you don't want to take me to see your mom?” Rebecca asked again, this time in a slightly harsher tone.
  • Danny paused, searching for the right words. He knew he couldn't keep avoiding this situation.
  • “Okay.” Danny finally agreed. “I'll take you to see my mom this weekend.”
  • After a lunch full of serious conversation, Danny took Rebecca to his mother's house.
  • From the car, Rebecca had already noticed the simple old house.
  • Danny said a greeting before entering. It happened to be his mother who came out to meet Rebecca.
  • “And who is this?” the woman asked with a curious expression.
  • “Mom, this is Rebecca.” Danny spoke with a voice full of respect. “She's the girl I'm close to right now.”
  • Megan was silent, looking at Rebecca with a scrutinizing gaze. She was a little surprised, but she didn't say anything.
  • "Good afternoon, Mrs. Spencer. Nice to meet you." Rebecca bowed slightly, giving a polite greeting.
  • But Megan shook her head, giving a friendly smile. “Don't call me Mrs. Spencer,” she said in a soft voice. “Just call me Mom.”
  • They were in the simple living room, accompanied by a cozy silence. Rebecca looked a little nervous. She tried to sit on the old sofa, but she looked uncomfortable.
  • Danny noticed and felt worried. “What's wrong, Beca?” he asked, his voice full of concern.
  • Rebecca gave a small smile, trying to calm Danny down. "Nothing's wrong. It's just that the couch is hard."
  • Megan, who overheard the conversation, looked a little embarrassed. “Sorry, Rebecca, if the couch is hard.”
  • “It's okay,” she said, trying to show that she wasn't bothered.
  • Megan then stood up, trying to change the subject. “Let me make you some tea,” she offered, trying to diffuse the slightly awkward atmosphere.
  • Rebecca declined. "No, ma'am. I don't usually drink local tea, and I'm on a sugar diet anyway."
  • Megan looked a little surprised by Rebecca's refusal, but she could only smile and nod.
  • Danny felt a little awkward about the situation. He turned to Rebecca, whispering in a barely audible voice, “Becca, don't you want to be more lenient with my mom?”
  • Rebecca was surprised. She looked at Danny for a moment before finally turning to Megan. “Mom, I'm sorry if I'm being rude.”
  • Megan just smiled, giving an understanding nod. “It's okay, Becca,” she replied, her voice soft and full of warmth. "I know that you're not used to this simple life. Everything here will be adjusted to your standards."
  • Danny's mother's words just now made Rebecca feel victorious.
  • That day, even though each knew the other was uncomfortable, the three of them tried to cover it up.
  • At least, Danny had fulfilled the first step. It was only later, after everything was done, that Danny was sure he would reap the benefits: a high position and a beautiful wife.
  • As the afternoon wore on, Danny excused himself from his mother's house to take Rebecca home.
  • Afterward, Danny returned to his house. Sitting alone, he thought of asking his mother about the woman who would replace Naomi.
  • Danny grabbed his cell phone and texted his mom. 'Mom, how's Rebecca? Am I compatible with her?' he typed, his heart pounding. 'Earlier, her attitude was a bit arrogant. Can you accept her?'
  • Danny thought too, if they didn't get along after the wedding, it would be troublesome for him too. If before, with Naomi, Danny could firmly choose his mother, for now, Rebecca was someone Danny had to fight for.
  • He waited for a while before the reply message finally appeared on his phone screen. 'Becca is a rich kid. If she's arrogant, it's natural. I understand her attitude. Instead of staying with Naomi, I'd rather you stay with her,' Megan replied, comparing her daughter-in-law Naomi who often annoyed her. She forgot, Naomi could behave like that not far from Megan who always insulted and compared her. Rebecca's arrogance was considered natural, while Naomi's defense was to blame.
  • 'Hurry up and legalize your divorce. I can't wait to have an elite daughter-in-law like Becca!'
  • Reading the message, Danny couldn't help but smile. Perhaps, he should propose to Rebecca soon.
