Chapter 6 The Gun
- I watched the car drive off from the window. The disappearance of the car had me springing to action. I canvassed his closet until I found money. Only a mafia man would have a bag full of cash just sitting there.
- I packed it all in my bag then packed a few clothes. I strapped on my sneakers then ran downstairs. The pain could wait. I dashed out the door, knowing it was too good to be true but nonetheless, I took the risk.
- I ran down the driveway and climbed out the gate. It was too easy, I knew. I slowly ran down, keeping a steady pace and bearing through the pain. I got to town after some time and took a cab straight out of town.
- With the money on me I could go hide anywhere for a few weeks but somehow I found myself going to school. My life as I knew it was over. I just needed to say goodbye to my friends before disappearing.
- “Can I borrow your phone?” I asked the driver.
- He fumbled for it and handed it to me.
- “Thank you.”
- I dialed the number I knew by heart.
- The phone rang with no answer as expected.
- Dad pick up, its me.
- I sent the text before calling again and he picked up on the first ring.
- “Serene?”
- I did not know the worry I carried until I heard his voice. I let out a deep breath before sitting back in my seat.
- “Yes dad. Hi.” I said, suddenly nervous.
- “Where are you?”
- My heart went crazy.
- “My new house, why?”
- Silence spread with my heart on my tongue.
- “What you did yesterday, never do that again. It’s by luck you are alive.” If only he knew what I was doing just then. “ Did he hurt you?” He finally asked casually.
- “No Dad, he didn’t hurt me.”
- I heard my old man take out a breath.
- “I know you can be stubborn Serene but try be a good girl. He is very dangerous and said to be unstable. He is Lurther’s best gun. Many have fallen by his hand. He is very temperamental. They don’t call him the exterminator for nothing.”
- Fear left me cold and I could hear from Father’s voice that he was impressed which could only be bad news for me. Only a sick man could impress another sicko.
- “Y—you are just scaring me dad.”
- “You should know me better Serene.” Yep, he didnt joke, even when he laughed, he never joked.
- “But you could have fought harder for me dad, I can’t….” I took a deep breath, “ I won’t survive this man.”
- I found myself stuck between a rock and a hard place.
- “Slade really wanted this marriage to take place.” He finished with me paling.
- But why?
- Running away would make things way worse for me. If they really wanted the marriage, they wouldn’t let me go so easily.
- My stomach turned.
- What have I done?
- Why did I always act without thinking?
- There was no way I could go back to school. There was no way I could risk Tate’s life like that. Once that creep found out where I was, he would kill them all.
- A ‘gun’ killed any enemies of the cartel. His job was killing. An image of my husband walking in covered in blood rushed to my mind.
- “I love you dad.”
- “Love you too kiddo. Stay safe and try, at least for me, to behave.”
- It was too late, I made everything worse. ‘Guns’ were in the job because of how brutal and emotionless they were. I should have suspected. It was in the way he fucked, hard and unforgiving. Not only were Guns dangerous but highly valued in the cartels.
- “I will dad. I have to go.” I said and mindlessly cut the call. I deleted the number and text before handing the phone back.
- I sat for four hours contemplating what to do. I had to go back. I had to. If not, I had to change my appearance and vanish into thin air.
- I was not sure what time it was but I was sure it was past midnight.
- A motel sign blinked not far ahead.
- “Please leave me in that motel.” I said, and I was sure the driver was happy to finally be rid of me. My head was pounding and I needed to think before taking a decision. There was no way my husband could find me after all the random turns I had made the driver take. Even I did not know where I was.
- From the counter on the dashboard I pulled a couple hundred dollar bills and gave the driver who counted, still not believing. I pulled out five hundred more.
- “This is for your silence. You never saw me.” I said, handing it to him and his eyes went wide.
- “Are you in trouble Miss?”
- I could see the worry in his eyes.
- “It’s better you don’t get involved.” I said, opening the door to slip out.
- It was so cold outside, nothing but a few girls standing at the corners of the motel.
- I shut the door, quickly scanning the area with nothing standing out but of course I was not an expect. I ran into the motel to get myself a room then headed there.
- It had been a long day. My pussy was still throbbing.
- After a shower, I wore my sleepwear then double checked the door.
- There was nothing to worry about. I was safe. He wouldn’t find me, not tonight anyway.
- I switched off the lights and lay in bed for a few hours before sleep took me.
