Chapter 8

  • Gavin’s POV
  • I had slept in a different room. In the guest room.
  • After taking a shower, I put on a casual set of gray lounge wear. As soon as I strolled out of the guest room, I saw Liza standing there with curiosity.
  • “You slept there? Why?” She asked me, glancing at me from head to toe.
  • I raised a brow and quietly rolled my eyes. There was absolutely no need explaining myself.
  • “Why are you quiet?” She asked in a teasing tone. “There's no reason to be. We're now married. We'll have to share a bed at some point.”
  • My mouth dropped agape at her bluntness. “So you want me to sleep with you?”
  • Liza never seized to amaze me. The fact that she had been insinuating all of these made me realize she might want me. Could she be attracted to me?
  • “Actually we don't have to share a bed,” she said after a moment of silence between us. “But sometimes I'll have to kiss you.”
  • I gave her a long, strange look. At this point, I was becoming more and more sure that her strange behaviors was because she wanted my body.
  • “If I remember right,” I said in a deep sarcastic tone, “weren't you ready to divorce me yesterday? You wanted us to go our different ways after the shares were transferred. That's what you wanted to talk about initially, right?”
  • For the first time since yesterday that I have crossed paths with Liza, she seemed genuinely surprised to know that I was able to figure out what she wanted to tell me yesterday before she changed her mind.
  • Until we kissed, I knew she was less interested in getting married. All she wanted was to get the shares and to get whatever revenge she wanted on her family.
  • I, on the other hand, had agreed to the marriage because of my father. The only reason we both got married was so that we could both benefit from it.
  • But now, things were beginning to change. Liza's look stayed too long on me, making me conscious of myself, her words sounded flirty and her behavior made it seem like she had an unexpected change of heart.
  • However, I couldn't stand the thought of getting too attached to her.
  • Finally, the surprised look on her face was replaced with something calm and unreadable. “I'm not going to say no. At first, I did wanted to get a split from you after we had achieved our goals but things are different now. Like I said, let's see where this leads to and then we could talk about divorce later.”
  • She glanced away and looked down at her phone. “And thanks for you help, I've written up a deal. I will give you my Sinclair Corporation Shares ahead of time.”
  • She looked up at me and continued. “On top of that, I'll promise you three things which I want you to choose for yourself. It's a rare offer, and I usually don't make such promises.”
  • I tilted my head a little in confusion. “What do you think I'd really need from you?”
  • I could get anything I wanted with just a word from me. But here was Liza, a woman who had just come back from living alone in the slum, offering to give me three things? What could she possibly offer me?
  • Liza gave me a nonchalant shrug. “Anything. Give it a name.”
  • My lips curled into a faint smirk but before I could say anything, Liza’s phone began to ring so loudly, breaking through the tension.
  • She took a step back and picked the call. I leaned against the wall, without any intention of leaving.
  • Then I heard the loud voice of the person from the other end. “Liza, what the hell are you doing? Your staff said you didn't come home last night? Were you with a guy? Are you not ashamed? You have made the Sinclair family’s name look bad!”
  • Liza took the phone away from her ear and waited for the noise to stop. Then she placed it back on her ear after a moment. “The Sinclair family’s image was ruined long before I had nothing to do with it, which was about twenty years ago to be precise. Also, in case you forgot, I told you yesterday that I got married.”
  • This time, the person from the other end wasn't loud enough so I couldn’t figure out what he was saying.
  • “If you called me to rant about something that doesn't matter, you don't need to waste your time. Just hang up.”
  • I almost laughed at that but I controlled it, biting my lips.
  • The tone came again, loudly, with his anger evident in every word. “Liza, don't think getting married will let you get away from me. Get to the hospital by 3. p.m today. And bring that husband of yours with you too!”
  • Liza sighed and finally hung up the phone. For a moment, there was silence between us until she faced me squarely.
  • She looked at me and I smiled at her. “Interesting family structure.”
  • Liza didn't reply me. She only gave me a shrug.
  • I didn't mean to eavesdropped but I couldn't help it. Besides, the person on the other end, which I figured was Mr. Sinclair, was loud enough for me to hear him.
  • “Do you need me to help?” I demanded with concern. If she wanted me to tag along, I didn't mind.
  • But she shook her head immediately. “There's no need for you to get involved in such a small matter. But since you want to help, perhaps you could help me with something else.”
  • A wide grin spread across her face and I figured what she wanted. Stepping away, I shook my head. “Nope. I've helped you enough.”
  • Liza rolled her eyes and said under her breath. “How cheap.”
  • I stopped mid-way when I heard that. It felt like a quiet command. A challenge.
  • Without hesitation, I turned around and took two long strides towards her. Without warning, I grabbed her face in between my palms and let my lips touch hers.
  • That was what she wanted.
  • My lips.
