Chapter 1 From Heaven to Hell

  • The sound of running water drifted out of the bathroom, still echoing faintly in the bedroom. The evening's fragrance lingered, as if reluctant to leave.
  • Lisette Connor looked at the tall shape visible through the frosted glass, picked up the nightgown from the floor, put it on, and opened the window. She made the bed, replaced the sheets and covers, and put away the things on the ground.
  • Something felt off about him tonight; she wondered if it was related to issues at work.
  • He had always kept his professional troubles to himself, and she never pried.
  • William Preston emerged from the bathroom in a robe.
  • Lisette spoke softly, "I've made the bed; you should get some rest."
  • William was a prominent businessman in Lincolnville and beyond. His company, Luxon Group, was a major player in the investment world. It was no exaggeration to say he even had enough power to shake up the whole of Lincolnville.
  • And she was just an ordinary girl from a modest background. The fact that she had managed to marry him seemed like something out of a fairy tale.
  • Since she couldn't help him with his work, she focused on creating a supportive home environment, ensuring he had no domestic worries.
  • William approached her, opened a drawer, and handed her a document. "Sign this."
  • Lisette took the paper, confused. "What is this?"
  • He had never handed her any documents before.
  • Without responding, William lit a cigarette and sank into the sofa, taking a long drag.
  • Lisette opened the document and saw the bold words "DIVORCE AGREEMENT" glaring at her. Her face went pale instantly.
  • Divorce ...
  • He wants a divorce ...
  • The document fell from her hands as she looked at William, her voice trembling. "You want ... a divorce?"
  • Just moments ago, they had made love, and now he was presenting her with a divorce agreement. It felt like an impossible nightmare.
  • "Yes."
  • William exhaled a cloud of smoke, his face partially obscured by the mist, making it hard for her to read his expression.
  • "Why?"
  • She knew she wasn't his equal, but over the past year, he had been so kind and attentive.
  • She had never been happier.
  • She had fallen deeply in love with him.
  • William frowned, clearly annoyed by the question.
  • But he replied, "I've fallen in love with someone else."
  • Lisette staggered back, collapsing against the bedside table.
  • A year ago, he had been the esteemed CEO, Mr. Preston, from Lincolnville, and she was an intern barely scraping by.
  • He had proposed, and when she asked why, he said it was because she was sensible.
  • He needed a sensible woman.
  • She had agreed.
  • Their life together felt like a dream. He introduced her to his family, and despite their disapproval, he married her, giving her a lavish wedding and proudly announcing to everyone that he had married a woman from a different background. Every day, despite his busy schedule, he would take her out, shop with her, and deal with her family's issues. He was a wonderful husband, showering her with warmth and affection, making her feel loved and cherished.
  • And now, he was saying he had fallen for someone else.
  • Lisette couldn't believe it.
  • But looking into his deep, dark eyes, she knew that no matter what she said, he had already made up his mind.
  • Her fingers clutched the edge of the bedside table, her nails bent outward, though she felt no pain.
  • She nodded. "Alright."
