Chapter 13 Theater II

  • Sebastian heard Julia even before he saw her enter the box. He was engaged in a conversation with Julia's mother, a conversation he didn't know how to extricate himself from. Meanwhile, his sister was so absorbed in the play that he was sure her reticule could fall down, and she still wouldn't notice.
  • Julia marched furiously to her seat and sat down. When she saw her mother, she plastered on a fake smile, the type that just stretched and stretched without reaching her eyes. Her teeth were clenched tightly behind her lips.
  • He chuckled inwardly. Now Julia wasn't even trying to smile; she just sulked as if someone had taken her favorite doll. When he turned back again, Ophelia was looking at him strangely, with a gleam in her eyes and a devious expression. Sebastian panicked, thinking she might be planning to match him with Julia. What else could she possibly be thinking with such a devious expression on her face? Hell! It was what all marriage-minded mothers thought about, looking for any opportunity to get an unsuspecting gentleman shackled to their daughter.
