Chapter 1
- Damon's POV:
- "You don't need to play fair in fights. You need to be wiser and faster if you lack strength!" I exclaimed to all my warriors, trying to make them understand my point.
- After a minute of silence, I continued, "Most of us lack strength, but we are very intelligent, and that alone is key. Just because you are missing a leg or an arm, it doesn't make you less of a pack member." This time, I spoke calmly.
- I wanted them to know that it didn't matter that we were a rogue pack.
- If other packs knew about us, they would laugh and mock us because it was unheard of for rogues to join or form a pack of their own.
- Rogues were mostly banished or deemed unworthy pack members by their original pack. They were unwanted and unloved, while some were those with a broken life or will, be it rejected by their mates or alpha.
- I understood them well because we shared a similar story.
- Once upon a time, I had it all: a pack that adored me with their whole hearts and a very handsome face.
- I was extremely rich, and my warriors were amazing on the battlefield. Sadly, my weakness was wanting more power. My young self believed my ultimate joy was in conquering packs, so my name would go down in history as one of the strongest alphas ever lived. So I conquered pack after pack and made it more of a game for me and my people. In all territories, the one I equalled to or who was alike to me was Ian because we shared the same goal without ever meeting.
- Everything was like heaven to me until she appeared, my mate.
- She was a vision to behold, a magical dream that I never knew I desperately longed for. Yes, she was the most beautiful woman I had ever set my eyes on.
- I wanted her so badly that it didn't matter to me that she had some people with her that she claimed were a part of her family.
- As she trembled before me, apologizing for trespassing in my territory, I was in awe.
- She went on to tell me how her pack was raided by rogues, and she had to run away with her family to safety.
- I wanted to question her because I doubted her story. Yet, when I saw tears running down her beautiful face, everything changed. All the doubts I had cleared up instantly. The woman was who I had waited for all my life, she was my mate, so I had to put my trust in her.
- My naive self back then cared less about which pack she had come from or if the people she was with were truly her actual family. All that went through my mind was that I wanted her at all costs.
- She was meant for me, and there was nothing that could change that, right? That's what I thought until she put a dagger through my back while I had my guard down. Yes, my so-called mate poisoned me with an overdose of wolfsbane beer and put a dagger in my back to kill me.
- Where did it all go wrong?
- It turned out that she had come from a pack I had once ambushed and destroyed. By then, I was so focused on having victory that I didn't care if some of the members were in the pack or not.
- On the night of the ambush, she was out of the territory with a few warriors, and I, being drunk in victory, couldn't realize that the daughter of the alpha wasn't around despite my beta mentioning it. When she came back to her pack, it was already in ruins, and I was already halfway to my pack.
- She mourned her family while I was in my pack celebrating my victory.
- She held a grudge against my people and trained her mental state and body for a few years as she took a vow of vengeance. What she had no idea of was that I would turn out to be her mate.
- It's funny how she told me all this while I was struggling for my life. She looked torn and sad for a second, but it was all replaced by her thirst for revenge.
- In front of her so-called family, she rejected me and walked away after lighting my whole pack in flames.
- I came to later find out that she had served my warriors a poisoned wine so they would lose their strength and die.
- While no one could fight or stand against her because she was a beta wolf, she struck.
- She already had amazing abilities as my Luna. That's why she made sure to use that privilege well as she tortured them badly.
- While I was truly in love with her, I put my pack in danger and let her do as she pleased.
- The woman bound to love and protect me through all pain and horror walked away without a second thought. I understood her pain, but the stupid me still hoped she would talk to me and let me make it all up somehow.I would have even agreed to die by her hand, just not with my pack.
- The thought of my pack members losing their lives with me made me so scared and feel very guilty. As I cried in my misfortune, I cried for the lives my pack was losing too.
- In that hour and on that day, I gave my life to the moon goddess because I knew it was going to be the end of me.
- Surprisingly, I was pulled out of the fire by my Beta and a few surviving warriors who had only taken a few shots of her served drinks. Although they were tortured too, she had decided to let them live with the pain of knowing how much they have lost in our pack, be it the members or things.
- We all acquired scars that were now a reminder of how weak I was as an alpha in love. I was the downfall of my pack.
- My face was so badly burnt that I resorted to wearing a mask throughout the day not to scare the remaining survivors.
- My Beta had two missing fingers, and some of the warriors had no legs and hands.
- My mate thought through everything well because she knew it would take time to kill us all, that's why she ordered her so-called family to leave my warriors crippled or dead. Luckily, only a few women and children were killed, but sadly I couldn't say the same for the pack men.
- We lost so much, and it took us years to restore what we had lost. Our pack became a refuge to all rogues in need of help, and soon our pack became a rogue pack. We were all scarred, and we understood each other's pain, so a stronger bond was formed.
- I completely closed off my heart to any woman because I lost my family too that day and those I cared for. Mate or not, I was never going to love and be weak again like I was in the past.
- With years, I grew wiser and came to an understanding with my wolf to never want a mate, be it a second chance mate or whatever they may be called.
- Although we decided to turn a blind eye to what our ex-mate had done to our pack, we vowed to slit her throat if we ever crossed paths with her.
- We destroyed her pack, and she did the same to us. We were even that way for as long as we would never meet.
- "Damon, a word." Alec, my Beta, said behind me.
- "I'm kind of busy, as "You can see," I answered calmly.
- "Alpha Damon, a word!" he said, raising his voice, making me turn to face him instantly.
- Whenever he called me alpha, I became alert because it meant that whatever he was calling me for was very important.
- "Continue your training, I will be joining you soon," I announced to my warriors, then patted Alec's shoulder slightly before walking ahead.
- He quickly followed me and walked beside me.
- "What is it?" I asked seriously.
- "A female crossed our pack's border," he reported.
- "And?" I asked seriously.
- Our pack welcomed most rogues; they just had to go through a one-month test to prove their worth and a few years to earn our trust. Alec was the one keeping an eye on them mostly. If he saw any sort of danger or had his distrust in them, we usually ended up killing them.
- "She's a blind human girl in her late twenties," he said as I stopped in my tracks.
- Just hearing that made my heart hurt.
- "Why didn't you send the poor thing away?" I asked seriously.
- "I didn't know what to do, Alpha. After all, this is the first time a human has crossed our territory," he answered.
- "Where is she?" I asked loudly.
- "In the dungeon," he answered.
- As soon as he said that, I found myself running towards the place.
- In just a minute, I walked in and began to slowly approach the last cell.
- With each step I took, my body began to feel weird, and in just a few seconds, I began trembling.
- My breathing got labored, and all I could smell was the beautiful scent of Jasmine the closer I got.
- "No," I whispered in a cracked voice as fear washed over me.
- The swelling emotions I was experiencing were exactly like those I had gone through when meeting my first mate.
- "No, it can't be," I whispered again to myself, then stood still, refusing to take the last few steps to look at her.
- I was so scared of how my wolf would forget our pain and how everything would turn into hell if it was my second chance mate in there.
- I inhaled deeply, released my breath, then turned and walked out of the dungeon without a word. I wasn't going to go through another heartbreak. As it was, I made a vow that I was bound to keep.
