Chapter 2 What Do You Say to Marrying Me?
- It was probably because Darius was riding with them, so no one on the bus dared to speak. Thus, Charlotte's ringtone stuck out like a sore thumb.
- Charlotte had shoved her phone into her pocket when she helped Darius back to his room last night, and it probably dropped when her clothes were taken off. After the enchanting endeavor, she had totally forgotten about her belongings.
- Charlotte quickly came to herself after recovering from her shock. It appeared that Darius had sat on the bus, waiting for her to fall into his trap. He might have already known she was the person last night, or perhaps he didn't. Nonetheless, the moment her phone rang, coupled with what she and Lucia had been talking about, she bet he would've figured out by now.
- Hence, Charlotte confessed without being pressed on any further.
- Lucia, on the other hand, looked at Charlotte with bewilderment before nudging her head in Darius' direction, evidently asking, 'What's going on?'
- "End the call." Charlotte pressed Lucia's hand. She couldn't take any more of the awkwardness, and she didn't even know how to explain things anymore.
- "What's going on? Why is your phone with President Leynthall?" Lucia whispered, wanting to gossip.
- "I…"
- Just as Charlotte was overwhelmed with awkwardness, Darius suddenly turned around, nearly scaring her spitless.
- "Is this your number?" Darius asked Lucia as he raised Charlotte's phone in the air so the two could see the caller ID 'Crazy Lucy'.
- It was Charlotte's nickname for Lucia.
- Meanwhile, the latter nodded with servility in response. "Yes, President. Charlotte couldn't find her phone, so she asked me to call it."
- How could Lucia say her name?! Now, she couldn't even hide anymore. Great!
- "Your phone? You left it on the front seat while putting your luggage away." Darius shifted his plain yet knowing gaze to Charlotte. Though his gaze was cordial and familiar, the sense of fathomless belonged only to Darius, and Charlotte couldn't read it no matter how.
- "Oh, is that so? Look at me—I'm such a klutz. Thank you, President." As fearful as she was, she graciously thanked Darius and took the phone from him with two hands, acting with him.
- After defusing the awkward situation, Darius turned back around.
- Though it looked like Charlotte was fiddling with her phone, her mind was elsewhere. The way he returned her phone also served as some sort of reminder; he was obviously telling her that whatever happened in the room should stay in the room.
- She was an adult, and she could play the game as well. Anyhow, she had intended to treat whatever happened last night as a dream anyway.
- Then again, she couldn't help wondering if the name 'Charlotte' was a good or bad one on his list, but she thought he was so busy there was no way he would ever take this to heart. Right?
- Time flew, and half a month had passed. Charlotte hadn't seen Darius since then. Even if there were any meetings, it was the senior management's job. After all, she was just an intern whose fate in the company was yet to be determined.
- Apart from worrying about her fate in NeoEast International, Charlotte would think about Darius every now and then. She'd think about that night specifically, for it was her first time.
- That day, her intercom rang.
- "Charlotte Joslin?" The voice on the other end sounded.
- Not only was Charlotte panicking, but she was also dumbfounded. Why did that voice sound so much like him?
- Ever since that night, Darius' magnetic voice would echo in her mind as he said, "Turn off the lights." Thus, his voice wasn't foreign to her.
- "Yes?"
- "Come to my office."
- "Pardon?"
- "Come to my office," he said once more.
- "Oh, okay." Charlotte's heart raced. This probably isn't about work. President Leynthall is leagues above me. Even if it's about work, he wouldn't need to see me directly. Is it about the team building retreat? Is he kicking me out so that more people won't find out?
- She entered Darius' office after knocking and found that he didn't act inattentively as he had been during the team building retreat. Instead, he was sizing her up, making her even more flustered.
- Though his eyes were fathomless as he glanced her up and down, it had Charlotte wanting more.
- Just like that, Charlotte stared avidly at him, baffling him the longer she stared.
- "Is there something on my face?" he asked.
- His voice pulled her out of her trance. "What?"
- However, Darius didn't keep at this matter but went straight to the point. "What do you say to marrying me?"
- "What?" she said again. This time, there was a slight frown on her face.
- His question was a world of difference from what she was thinking.
