Chapter 12 Bear The Consequences Yourself
- Ms. Wu led Chu Meng out of the room, politely introducing the rest of the floor, “Young Master Han's room is next to yours; he prefers peace and quiet. On the westernmost side is Young Master Yun's room.”
- Chu Meng nodded and asked, “Do Old Master and Madam Situ live on the third floor?”
- Ms. Wu smiled, “Old Master and Madam Situ live in the old mansion, and this is Young Master Han's villa. Only Young Miss comes over occasionally to stay a few days; her room is on the third floor. But now that Young Miss has gone out of the country, the floor upstairs is empty.”
- No wonder Situ Han had said she did not need to worry about his family's reactions.
- The room and bed were comfortable, but Chu Meng had trouble sleeping in an unfamiliar bed. Still unable to sleep even after midnight, she made her way to the kitchen. Opening the fridge to get a glass of milk, she turned around and screamed in shock when she saw someone standing behind her.
- Situ Han stood in front of Chu Meng; a dark look on his face. Anybody would have a dark look on their face if someone screamed at them in the middle of the night.
- “What are you doing here so late at night?” His tone was icy.
- Chu Meng gave an embarrassed laugh, “I couldn't sleep so I thought I would heat up some milk to help me sleep. You can't sleep either? Would you like some milk too?”
- “No need.” Spitting out those two words, Situ Han turned and left, a glass of hot water in his hand.
- Just as Chu Meng finished her milk and laid back down on the bed, it suddenly started to rain heavily. The sky outside the windows were eerily dark as lightning flashed every now and then. Curled up under the blankets, Chu Meng shivered violently.
- Normally so strong and independent, who would have thought that Chu Meng would be afraid of thunder? Every time thunder boomed; Chu Meng gave a short scream as she trembled like a leaf in the wind. She was so terrified she could not bring herself to get up and pull the curtains shut. Suddenly, a loud knocking sound from her door.
- “What's wrong with you?” Situ Han's voice was impatient and annoyed.
- Still hiding under the blankets, Chu Meng replied in a low, muffled voice, “I-I'm f-fine.” She absolutely did not want him to know her fear of thunder!
- “If there's nothing wrong then sleep early. Don't affect my rest.” His voice was slightly accusing.
- Chu Meng clenched her teeth. She should have known better than to think he was concerned about her. Clearly, her noise had bothered him.
- Her stubbornness kicked in and she bit down on a towel. No matter how terrified she was, she refused to make another sound. With much difficulty, she eventually managed to fall asleep.
- In the morning, Chu Meng went through her morning routine before she headed downstairs. Situ Han was already sitting at the dining table having breakfast. His refined upbringing showed in his elegant movements.
- “Morning.” Chu Meng politely greeted. She had not actually expected a response from him and so was surprised by his mild 'yeah'.
- Ms. Wu led Chu Meng over to sit opposite Situ Han. The two of them silently ate their breakfast. Completely focused on the fried egg on her plate, she did not notice when Situ Han finished eating nor the two times he glanced at his watch. When she finally finished and set down her fork, Situ Han suddenly stood up, “Ms. Wu, tell Wang to drive Ms. Chu to work.”
- Ms. Wu gave a reply and hurried out of there.
- “Sorry to inconvenience you.” Chu Meng was beginning to understand the man. He had an impeccable upbringing and was like a true gentleman. However, when faced with someone he did not like, he was unable to completely hide the disdain in his eyes.
- He would not take them seriously. In fact, he would probably not even bother to pretend he cared in front of them.
- Situ Han's face was expressionless as he looked at her, “It's not an inconvenience. After all, I don't trust you. After work, Wang will be waiting for you downstairs. If you take more than ten minutes to come out, I'll assume you've run off. I'll not be held accountable for whatever I do in consequence.”
- “Ten minutes? It'll take me at least five minutes to get from the office to downstairs. What if I suddenly have some urgent matters to attend to and can't leave?” In their profession, overtime was part and parcel of the job. Limiting her like this was just picking on her!
- “That's your problem, not mine.” Situ Han got in his car and slammed the door shut, leaving her standing outside the car.
- Unwilling to let it go just like that, Chu Meng banged on his window, “Hey, explain what you meant! If I run off, what consequences will I face?”
- Situ Han did not even look at her, “Drive.”
- The car blasted off, spitting fumes at her face. Angry beyond measure, she gritted her teeth as she raised her middle finger at the retreating car.
- Seeing this from the rearview mirror of the car, Lu Zihao snuck a glance at the man sitting in the backseat of the car. The President's lips were pinched together tightly in anger. Lu Zihao could not help but to be worried for the bold and daring Ms. Chu.
- Walking out from the chief editor's office, Chu Meng was in a happy mood.
- She had handed in the interview report and the photo she had stealthily taken of Situ Han to Lisa. She had also come to an agreement with her chief editor. In ten days, she would be transferred to the French branch. Situ Han would not be able to get hold of her then!
- But what if he threatened her with her Aunt and Uncle? As the possibility occurred to her, Chu Meng broke out in cold sweat.
- She had to think of a way to protect them all. Perhaps, it was time to get some leverage against Situ Han.
