Chapter 2 Back Home

  • Amanda quickly made her way to Mitchell's office.
  • Three sets of eyes in the office shifted their focus to Amanda. Mitchell sighed in relief as if he had been saved. “Finally, you're here! If you had been any later, these two would have turned my office into a complete mess!”
  • Only after hearing Mitchell's complaints did Amanda notice the state of the office. It was in complete disarray, and even Mitchell's hair was a mess.
  • “Professor...” Amanda truly didn't know what to say. “I'm really sorry for the trouble they've caused you.”
  • Mitchell waved his hand, his face showing signs of exhaustion. His eyes were filled with a plea as he said, “Please, have Elliot recover the data on my computer as soon as possible! The contents are of great importance!”
  • “Mommy! Professor Morgan is so mean! He actually made you work overtime for three straight days and nights.” The two children clung to Amanda's legs, their beautiful eyes sparkling brightly, their small mouths expressing clear discontent toward Mitchell.
  • Mitchell laughed in exasperation. “Who in the research institute hasn't worked overtime like this? Only you two are so concerned about your mother!”
  • Mitchell was seething with anger, yet he was utterly helpless. Amanda was his most prized student, possessing an extraordinary aptitude for medicine. Furthermore, her two children were far smarter than their peers, each excelling in their own respective fields.
  • Alvin, the elder brother, had already mastered the art of healing even at his tender age. He could identify thousands of medicinal herbs, demonstrating a unique talent in the field of medicine. Moreover, he had an incredibly sharp intuition when it came to investment-related matters.
  • On the other hand, Elliot had always been fascinated with things like programming, so much so that he had become a little hacker. He had a keen sense for numbers and an incredible talent when it came to investments.
  • Being merely gifted wasn't sufficient to captivate the adults. What was more significant was that Alvin and Elliot had fully inherited their parents' superior genes, growing up to be quite attractive.
  • No one could resist the charm of an attractive child.
  • “Alvin, Elliot, you really can't blame Professor Morgan. We're at a crucial stage in the experiment right now. Even if Professor Morgan tells me to take a break, I can't bear to rest,” Amanda patiently explained, aware that both children were concerned for her wellbeing.
  • “Mommy, you have to promise us that you won't pull an all-nighter at work again.” The two children led Amanda to the couch, one on each side, and then began to massage and pat her back.
  • “I promise you, but you boys also need to apologize to Professor Mogan. His computer contains important research data. What if it gets lost?”
  • The two children looked at Mitchell aggrievedly and bowed their heads. “We're sorry, Professor Morgan.” Then, Elliot straightened up and looked at Mitchell. “I only meant to give you a little scare, Professor Morgan. Not only did we not lose any data, but I also added an extra layer of protection!”
  • Elliot moved to Mitchell's side and began restoring the data on the computer.
  • His fingers flew across the keyboard as he rapidly typed out a string of code.
  • A few minutes later, the computer screen flickered, instantly returning to its original state.
  • After taking a look at it, Mitchell couldn't help but marvel once again deep within his heart. His student was a medical prodigy, and his student's two sons were also geniuses.
  • They were a family with exceptional genes. This appreciation for superior genetics was precisely why Mitchell found it difficult to reprimand the two children too severely whenever they caused mischief at the research institute. He could only resort to admonishing Amanda.
  • However, he had more pressing matters to discuss with Amanda that day and had no intention of wasting time scolding her.
  • “All right, all right, the reason I've called you here is to give you a task. I'm planning to set up a research institute back home, focusing on traditional medicine. But I have a lot of work on my plate right now and can't spare the time. So, I've thought it over and decided to send you back!”
  • Amanda caught the keyword “back home.”
  • Back home? As in Clusia?
  • Her eyes widened. She took a deep breath, thinking she had misheard. “You're saying returning home? To Clusia?”
  • “Yes, to Clusia,” Mitchell repeated seriously.
  • “No!” Amanda refused on the spot.
  • Alvin and Elliot immediately sensed the shift in Amanda's mood. They tugged at the hem of her dress and said softly, “Mommy, don't be afraid.”
  • “Mommy, if you don't want to go back, we won't. Let's ask Professor Morgan to consider sending someone else back instead,” Alvin suggested.
  • Observing Amanda's increasingly distressed expression, Mitchell found himself at a loss for words. All he wanted was for Amanda, his most prized student, to have a better future.
  • Amanda gave Mitchell a bitter smile. The memories she had tucked away suddenly flooded her mind. She thought she was strong enough, but recalling the past still stirred up a storm within her.
