Chapter 7 War God

  • CHAPTER 7
  • The car came to a screeching halt in front of the police station, Vera exhaled a distressed sigh, trying to recall the last time she saw this building. It’s been ages. She couldn’t quite recall her last visit, that’s how long ago it was.
  • The officers stepped out first, slamming the door shut, the male officer turned to hold the door for her.
  • “Ma’am” he mumbled and glanced at her without further words, and Vera took that as her cue to exit the car.
  • She stepped out feet first and grunted a little as she reached for her purse, stepping out and aside for the officer to shut the door.
  • Vera let out a sigh of relief, grateful that she could finally leave the confines of that awfully smelling car, wondering how the officers could cope with it all day. She slowly moved her head from side to side as she once again could breathe in the fresh air.
  • The male officer led the way this time while the female followed close behind, boring holes in the back of Vera’s head with her eyes, she could feel it. The officer slid the glass door open and they entered.
  • They went through a couple of doors and turned down hallways with the officers waving and yelling hello to their colleagues who stared at her.
  • “Haven’t had a classy suspect in a while, yeah?” Vera thought within herself, letting a small smile slip.
  • “Please sit down ma’am,” the female officer said curly gesturing with her hand at one of the seats.
  • Vera moved towards the chair, sliding it from underneath the table, and sat down, placing her purse in front of her.
  • She hissed under her breath as the coldness of the steel chair was cold and sent light shivers through her body leaving a trail of goosebumps on her skin, She adjusted trying to get a little comfortable despite the hardness.
  • She felt the eyes of the officers trained on her and lifted her head to meet the female officers.
  • “I’ll call in the detective,” she said and left before Vera could give a reply, locking the doors behind her.
  • Vera scanned the room, fixing her eyes on the dark screen in front of her, which she knew was used as a monitor in previous movies she had seen. There were probably two or three detectives behind it.
  • The door made an odd vibration and click sound indicating that it was unlocked, a detective walked on clad in a dark blue suit that accentuated his body perfectly. He smelt of strong manly cologne and sandalwood, which made Vera’s nose itch a little.
  • She sat upright in her seat, crossing her right leg over her left, crossing her arms at Akimbo and head straight.
  • “Good evening Mrs.…” the detective said, stretching a fine lean hand towards her with a curt nod accompanying it.
  • “It’s miss now, please. I just got divorced” Vera replied, taking his hand ever so lightly.
  • “O my apologies, the file said Mrs. Vera Armstrong,” the detective said.
  • “Apology fully accepted” Vera replied with a tight smile.
  • “Can we get this over with? I’m a busy woman and all this is slowing me down not to talk about messing up my schedule, I’m just not one to make a fuss, that’s why I’ve been calm”.
  • Vera said in one breath, pointing a finger at the desk, making sure to keep her face expressionless, all while being fierce and making sure the detective understood her point.
  • “I’m so sorry, miss, now that you are here it shouldn’t take too long” The detective paused for good measure.
  • “Would you like a glass of water, maybe? It would help you calm down” the detective asked.
  • “No, thank you, I’m perfect”
  • “Okay, I just have a few questions for you about the incident which I know you are very much aware of”
  • “Okay”
  • “What relationship did you and the deceased?”
  • “Relationship?” Vera asked, chuckling lightly.
  • “Yes miss”
  • “Barely any, we did a few business deals in the past and three years ago my mother wanted me to marry him. We did not exactly get along, nor did we have anything in common. He saw me as a competition, which was very obvious, but otherwise, no relationship at all” Vera concluded, taking a much-needed breath.
  • “Okay. Miss Vera, why did you leave the venue of the incident before it even actually began?”
  • “I got a call from my office, apparently Some secret Savior had donated a massive sum to fund our most recent project again and my assistant called immediately he came in, and I was determined to say thank you this time around, so I asked my assistant to keep him for a couple of minutes while I rushed down”.
  • “Did you catch up with him though?” the detective asked, squinting his eyes with his head angled and looking at her from his lashes.
  • “No. I did not, he’d left before I got to the office” Vera answered.
  • “Can your assistant or anyone at the office testify to this?”
  • “Yes detective” Vera replied, twitching her lips from side to side.
  • “Did you at any point during the party see Mr Anderson?”
  • “No”
  • “Are you sure, miss”
  • “I’m not blind, I’m perfectly sure what and who I saw and did not see,” Vera said with a little raise in her tone, This was becoming too exhausting, and she could feel herself slowly losing it.
  • “When did you find out about Mr Anderson’s death?”
  • “A couple of hours ago, my mother called to deliver the news. I had to rush back to comfort her, she was in tears and her voice was trembling tremendously. She loved Steve like a son and was close friends with his mother.”
