Chapter 16 Rising Tide

• The towering wall of water surged toward them, hungry and merciless. Scarlett’s scream was lost in the thunderous roar as the grain silo collapsed into the sea behind them. Planks splintered, beams snapped, and the pier trembled. Olivia yanked Isla close, shielding her with her body, while Theo grabbed Scarlett’s other hand and bolted.
• They ran as fast as their legs could carry them, but the wave was faster. It surged up the pier, swirling around their ankles like a living thing. Water, dark with oil and debris, lapped their calves, rising with each heartbeat.
• Scarlett stumbled on a broken beam. Olivia caught her, pulling her upright. Theo slipped on slick wood but scrambled back to his feet, determination blazing in his eyes.
