Chapter 4 He's Looking For Her

  • Outside the room, Mason Markle stood guard at the staircase in a suit and tie.
  • Colton spotted him and headed straight for the study.
  • Mason followed, shut the door behind him, and stood by it to report.
  • "Mr. Lowell, according to the composite sketch we sent out, there's no match in the population system. The receptionist said the girl looked a mess that night, probably from makeup smudged by tears, looked almost like a ghost, so she didn't get a clear look at her real face."
  • Colton frowned. "Can't the hotel's CCTV be fixed?"
  • "They had everything prepped that night. The hotel's CCTV system was down for three days; there's no fixing it."
  • "D*mn it!" Colton clenched his fists tightly. "Keep looking, even if we have to turn Nodale upside down to find her."
  • "Sure thing, you should get some rest."
  • Having worked with Colton for years, this was the first time Mason saw him so taken with a woman. He didn't dare delay and quickly made himself scarce.
  • Alone, Colton's deep eyes stared out into the night, but his mind replayed that soul-stirring moment, the tender body that seemed to still leave its warmth in his palm.
  • He had promised to marry her, yet she had run away.
  • She had given him her first time, yet she still saved him.
  • Only such a kind-hearted woman deserved to be Mrs. Colton!
  • The next day, bright and early.
  • Selene was dropped off at the Jacobsons Mansion by the butler.
  • A bride returning to her parents' home without the groom clearly meant something.
  • She was just a wife through trade, so Colton didn't care for such cliches.
  • Truth be told, she didn't want to return to that place either, but she had to put on a show for the Lowell Family.
  • In the city center, the Jacobsons' ancestral courtyard was a grand old house left by her ancestors.
  • The place was in disrepair, but demolishing it would mean a hefty compensation.
  • Looking at the open gates, Selene couldn't help but smile wryly.
  • Ever since her stepmother kicked her out, she hadn't stepped foot here.
  • Years had passed, and everything had changed.
  • "Mrs. Lowell, Mr. Lowell said you're free to do as you please today. I'll head back now."
  • The butler turned and let her know before leaving.
  • Selene felt unexpectedly relieved.
  • It seemed Colton had no intention of restricting her freedom, which was indeed a relief.
  • "Take care, drive safely."
  • She got out of the car and walked into the courtyard, naturally putting on a show for the butler.
  • In the center of the courtyard, the peach tree her mother had planted still stood. She couldn't help but walk over to it.
  • It wasn't the season for blossoms yet, and the bare branches were stark.
  • But on the trunk, you could still see the marks her mother had made to measure her height.
  • Selene reached out to touch the uneven lines, and her eyes began to tear up.
  • She missed her mother terribly.
  • "Mom, Selene is back."
  • Inside the room, Sabrina finally noticed her and quickly cuddled into Mandy's arms. "Mom, please start. I can't wait anymore."
  • "Alright, for you, I have been doing so much!"
  • Mandy picked up the cell phone from the nightstand and sent out a voice message.
  • Soon after, a few burly men rushed through the gate and surrounded Selene.
  • "Who are you?"
  • These men looked like thugs. Selene instinctively stepped back, her hand reaching for her waist…
