Chapter 2 Her Son Is Sick

  • Five years later, in a room at the downtown hospital—
  • A nurse was injecting a little boy. The boy sat obediently in the chair with his jet-black bangs perfectly in place. His big, gem-like eyes sparkled, and his delicate features were irresistibly cute.
  • After finishing the injection, the nurse took out a piece of candy for him.
  • The little boy shook his head and said in a sweet, childish voice, "My mom said I couldn't have candy this week. Thank you, though."
  • "You're such a wonderful boy!" The nurse patted his head.
  • He was the youngest leukaemia patient in their hospital, not only adorable but also extraordinarily well-behaved.
  • "Oh! Speaking of the devil, here comes your mother."
  • Outside the ward, Anne felt a mix of emotions, and her heart was aching.
  • Silas turned over his shoulder and saw his mother. He curved his big eyes and let out a gentle, healing smile. Silas greeted her and said, "Good evening, Mommy."
  • "Good evening, Duckie. Guess what yummy food I made for you today?" Anne walked in, trying to sound cheerful. She enjoyed a delightful meal with her son.
  • The nurse gave Anne a meaningful look. Understanding this, Anne asked Silas to eat by himself while she stepped out with the nurse.
  • The nurse, Thelma Snider, was familiar with the mother-son situation. She noticed that Anne looked more worn out than before. Though reluctant, Thelma kindly reminded her, "Ms. Johnson, Silas's condition has been stable, but he's been on imported medication, and your medical expenses are running low."
  • Anne's heart clenched. She had just paid last month and hadn't expected the funds to run out so quickly.
  • Hurriedly, she handed Thelma the money Kyla Palmer had recently given her. She pleaded, "Ms. Snider, I don't have enough money right now. Can you please give us a few more days?"
  • Thelma patted her hand, but she also sounded troubled. She said, "We'll do our best to continue treatment, but the hospital has its rules. If the medical bills aren't covered, I'm afraid the hospital might stop Silas's treatment."
  • Anne quickly replied, "I'll find a way, I promise."
  • Inside the ward, Silas was quietly eating. Watching him, Anne couldn't hold back her tears.
  • Having this child was purely accidental.
  • Back then, when she found out she was pregnant, she went to the hospital to get an abortion. However, without money, she ended up at a clinic.
  • The doctor stated that there was fraud without a license. At six months pregnant, when her belly started to show, she realised the doctor hadn't aborted the baby at all.
  • It was too late for an abortion, so Anne had to have the baby.
  • Because of the premature birth, the child was born with congenital leukaemia, and he needed a bone marrow transplant. Upon finding no match, Silas stayed in the hospital and relied on imported medication to stabilise his condition.
  • The doctor said the most likely match would be the child's father.
  • Finding the father among the vast sea of people was easier said than done. Back then, Anne didn't even know what the man looked like. How could she locate him now?
  • Anne wore a troubled expression, but she smiled warmly at her son.
  • "Mommy, the nurse praised me for being brave today! I'm all grown up now. Getting shots doesn't hurt at all." Silas said proudly.
  • "Silas is the best. Mommy loves you." Anne kissed her son's forehead.
  • "Mommy, I love you too."
  • Looking at her son's pale face, Anne felt a sharp pain in her heart. She clenched her fists and smiled. "Silas, can you be even braver? Mommy might be very busy later. You'll have to stay in the hospital alone, receive shots, and take medicine by yourself. If you miss Mommy, you might not see me. Are you scared?"
  • The idea of not seeing his mom was too serious, even for such an understanding child like Silas. He couldn't help but frown.
  • But soon, Silas smiled brightly and said, "I'm not scared!"
  • Anne hugged her sensible, sweet son tightly.
  • If she could, she wouldn't leave her hospitalised son. She wanted to take care of him every day. But—
  • Silas's illness needs to be cured. She had to work multiple jobs to earn more money, and she had to find Silas's father.
