Chapter 6 Freaked Out
- Ten minutes later, Zayne's interview ended.
- When he exited the room, Avery immediately stood up and asked, “How was it?”
- “The interviewers' questions were pretty tough, but it's nothing we can't handle.” He couldn't help but kiss her forehead. “Overall, I'd say it's pretty good.”
- Avery let out a sigh of relief.
- “Next, Avery Rumpley,” the female secretary called again.
- Avery tidied her clothes and entered the room anxiously.
- The moment she stepped in, Cayden's complicated look landed on her.
- She sat properly, raised her head, and exchanged glances with every interviewer.
- Then she introduced herself briefly, “Good morning, interviewers. First of all, I would like to say that I'm glad all of you gave me a chance for this interview. I'm Avery Rumpley.”
- Before she decided to return to her birth country to work, she had thought about what she should say when the interview started.
- Perhaps her opening wasn't that fancy, but it definitely was reliable and faultless.
- As the interview continued, Cayden studied her coldly.
- Avery felt very uncomfortable as she answered the interviewers' questions smoothly. It was likely because he was staring at her a little too hard.
- It wasn't just an ordinary discomfort. She felt as though there were needles prickling her entire body.
- Back when Avery first stepped into the room, she did glance at Cayden.
- However, because it was a formal interview, she had to maintain her professionalism. While she had a lot of questions, she couldn't let them distract her.
- “Are you married, Ms. Rumpley?” Cayden asked coldly as he interrupted the interviewers. His abrupt question flabbergasted all the interviewers.
- The interviewers all stopped their professional exchange with Avery and turned to their boss.
- “No.” Avery was barely able to reply calmly because she was totally freaking out by that abrupt question.
- “Then do you already have someone you plan to marry?” Cayden furrowed his eyebrow and asked again.
- She paused and nodded. “Yes.”
- The interviewers had no idea why their boss was asking a question like that.
- During that short exchange, she was able to study Cayden's delicate facial features in detail. He really does look like the senior I met during my high school years before.
- The successful businessman in front of her was very different from the teenage boy she once saw during her school years.
- Whether in terms of his demeanor or appearance, Cayden left a very cold and ruthless impression on Avery.
- Once the interview ended, Avery walked out of the room, exhausted.
- “How did it go? Tell me!” Nina asked first.
- Avery replied with a confounded expression, “The interviewer asked me if I'm already married and if I already have someone I plan to marry.”
- Zayne furrowed his eyebrows when he heard that. What kind of question is that? Why is the interviewer asking about her private life?
- Nina reassured, “That's normal. It's just how things go here. You should be glad that they didn't ask if you already have a kid.”
- “But why would they ask that?” Avery asked perplexingly when they arrived at the bottom floor.
- “Because if someone has a child, their work may get delayed or interrupted.” Nina stared at her brother and Avery. “There's a lot of discrimination against married women, especially if they have children, at companies in this country. I know it seems shocking because you've just returned from overseas. You'll get used to it.”
- That afternoon, Zayne and Avery got a call that they were getting two months' probation at the company. If they managed to pass various examinations after the probation ended, they would be able to stay in Trident Group as official employees.
- The next day, Nina and Zayne came to pick up Avery before heading to work.
- “I'm planning to buy my own car, so we don't need to ride my sister's car anymore,” Zayne told Avery before he walked into the design department.
- “What, you don't like me getting in between you two's alone time?” Nina teased as she intentionally walked in between them.
- Avery smiled. “Both of you don't need to pick me up starting tomorrow. It's too troublesome to drive to my residential area just to pick me up. Besides, it's not that bad riding the subway.”
- It was the first day of work, so Avery was working exceptionally hard.
- During the afternoon, Zayne was suddenly summoned to go on a business trip to another state by a senior in his department.
- Before he left, he grabbed his work-only laptop, hurriedly bade Avery goodbye, and headed downstairs.
- He was pretty confused by what the design department was doing. Aren't they afraid a newbie like me will mess up or lower the efficiency of the team's work?
- Avery didn't think about it too much as she familiarized herself with her work.
- When it was about time to get off work, Nina arrived at her side. “It's been decided that you'll be having dinner at my house tonight. Your future mother-in-law has invited you.”
- Avery was familiarizing herself with the company's outstanding blueprints in the past years. When she heard what Nina said, she raised her head and informed with a bitter smile, “I just got the news that I need to work overtime...”
- Nina widened her eyes before she quickly returned to her desk and checked her email. Crap! We really do need to work overtime! Sure, the design department has frequent overtime work, but Avery and Zayne are way too unlucky. Zayne was sent on a business trip on his first day here, while Avery is forced to work overtime!
- Both women ate boxed dinners with their colleagues before working overtime.
- It wasn't until half past ten in the night that Nina and two other women were allowed to return home by their supervisor.
- Avery continued to work.
- Still feeling the effects of the time difference between two different countries, she was feeling very sleepy.
- She stood, grabbed a cup, and went to pour herself a cup of coffee.
- When she returned, the supervisor saw her and said, “The boss wants this blueprint. Send it to him quickly.”
- Avery immediately put her cup down and left the design department with the blueprint.
- There were only three people left in the room—the supervisor, a senior designer, and her, the newbie learning the ropes.
- So, it was only natural that she was asked to take the blueprint to the boss.
- When Avery entered the elevator, Cayden's delicate and cold face surfaced in her mind.
- The elevator reached all the way to the top floor.
- It took a while before she found her way to the CEO's office.
- She knocked on the door.
- “Come in.” Cayden's voice sounded deep but indifferent.
- Avery pushed the door open and strolled toward the large desk in the cool-colored office. Then she placed the blueprint on the table and said, “Here's the blueprint you want, Mr. Moore.”
- Cayden was also buried in his work as he grabbed the blueprint and looked at it. Just as she was about to leave, he suddenly lifted his head and gazed at her.
- Avery couldn't help but stand still out of politeness because she wasn't sure if he had other orders for her.
- Cayden's line of sight was fixed on her for a long while. Hmm, she has become more mature appearance-wise after these five years. Her chest and bosom have certainly gotten more voluptuous. Not to mention her beauty and aura are top-notch.
- “You can get off work now. Go back and prepare yourself for a business trip with me tomorrow.” He looked away and shifted his focus back to his work again.
- She wanted to say she wasn't capable enough for that yet, but from his cold, resolute tone, it was pretty clear he wasn't going to take no for an answer.
- All she could do was nod and leave.
- Cayden stared at her again when she turned around. Her back utterly mesmerized him, especially her slim, sexy hips.
- It wasn't until moments later that he realized his throat and chest were going numb as a primal desire awoken in him.
