Chapter 4 Signing The Contract

  • Sure enough, only a wealthy person like her could utter such words.
  • However, when I thought about the money, I was tempted again. After all, they were offering a lot of money, so a little warning didn't seem out of line.
  • Moreover, I found it hard to believe that Jayden would be so difficult to please that I couldn't find him a wife within a year. If Strasson couldn't provide a suitable match, then I would search in other cities. I felt certain that I could find him a suitable match somewhere.
  • Human beings would do anything in pursuit of wealth. I figured it was worth taking a chance for two million.
  • “All right!” I agreed, nodding my head.
  • Ophelia then gestured to Eamon, who quickly produced a document.
  • As I glanced over the contents, I felt rather speechless.
  • Being a businesswoman, Ophelia was quite adept at strategizing.
  • However, since I had already agreed, there wasn't much left to say. I promptly signed the contract and even left an imprint with my thumb.
  • Before leaving, Ophelia handed me a card with five hundred thousand in it as funds to carry out my work.
  • Holding onto card, I was overjoyed to the point of death. It was as if an unexpected windfall had just fallen into my lap.
  • When it was time for me to leave, the driver from the Shandor family gave me a ride. We left thereafter.
  • Ophelia then ascended the stairs, her gaze falling upon Jayden lying in the coffin as she gently caressed his handsome face.
  • “Jay, are you satisfied with this woman?”
  • The candle on the table flickered eerily.
  • After waiting for a while, Ophelia left the room and upon seeing Eamon, she asked, “Has Noelle's hush money been paid?”
  • “Yes, Mrs. Shandor,” Eamon replied respectfully.
  • “Tell her to keep her mouth shut if she knows what's good for her!” Ophelia said, rubbing her aching forehead.
  • “Understood, Mrs. Shandor.”
  • When I got home, it was already past eleven. I placed the card on the coffee table and couldn't stop admiring it. Deep down inside, I was elated.
  • After setting down the card, I headed to the bathroom for a shower. Strangely enough, despite it being summer, I was overcome by a chill. Moreover, throughout my shower, I couldn't shake off this eerie feeling of being watched.
  • When I emerged from the bathroom wrapped in a bath towel, the clock on the wall had just struck twelve.
  • In a hurry, I dashed back to the bed and burrowed under the covers.
  • Thinking about the two million I was about to receive, along with today's half a million, a smile formed at the corner of my mouth.
  • Two and a half million was truly a huge sum.
  • That night, I had a dream. In it, I saw Jayden kissing my earlobe, whispering something into my ear. Regrettably, I couldn't make out what he was saying.
  • When I woke up the next day, it was already past nine in the morning. I couldn't help but chuckle to myself, wondering if I had been single for too long. I had, after all, managed to have such an erotic dream, and it was even about someone who was no longer alive.
  • After freshening up, I opened the door.
  • Morgana was quite strict and absolutely forbade me from shutting the door without a good reason. However, as luck would have it, as soon as I opened the door, I found her standing outside with a stern look on her face, staring at me.
  • “G-Grandma...” I called out nervously, wishing I could sink my head into my shoulders to make myself less noticeable.
  • Morgana didn't say much. She entered and took a seat, her gaze fixed on me as she asked, “Are you keeping something from me?”
  • I froze in shock.
  • Could she be referring to yesterday's incident? In principle, it was a major taboo for me to have agreed so confidently, signed a contract, and even end up implicating myself in the process. After all, not every matchmaking endeavor would be successful, so spirit matchmakers wouldn't make pledges, nor would they stake their own reputation as a guarantee. And yet, I had even signed a contract for the sake of money.
  • “I...”
  • Morgana's face was etched with wrinkles, yet her eyes were particularly sharp. It was as if they could see right through me.
  • “I'm not!” It was the first time I lied to my grandmother.
  • “Really? Are you sure?”
  • “Yup!”
  • “Where were you last night, then?” Morgana asked sternly.
  • “I went out to have fun with Noelle! If you don't believe me, you can ask her!” I remarked casually.
  • Upon hearing my words, Morgana finally let out a sigh of relief, looking as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
  • “How has business been lately?” Morgana asked, suddenly changing the subject.
  • I shook my head. “Just so-so!”
  • Morgana let out a sigh. “Addie, I've been thinking about it. You're so young, so there's really no need for you to spend all your time managing this little matchmaking agency. Why don't we close it down so you can find someone to settle down with sooner?”
  • Morgana had always placed great importance on this matchmaking agency, even insisting that I become a spirit matchmaker. But now, she was being so kind to me and even wanted to close down the agency. I just couldn't understand why.
