Chapter 6

  • CHAPTER SIX
  • The sound of Adele's alarm rudely woke her up from her sleep. With her eyes still closed, she stretched her right hand to her nightstand and blindly searched for her phone. When she found it, she quickly picked it up and sat up alright to turn off the alarm.
  • On days like that, she wanted to shoot the phone at the wall, but she could not because it had been a gift from sone unknown person a few months ago.
  • The phone arrived at her work place in a parcel with no name or address
  • on it.
  • There was just a simple note on it which had read:
  • "If you break the screen, I will be disappointed"
  • She was terrified for two reasons.
  • First, the phone was her dream phone, Samsung Galaxy S 22 ultra. It was the latest phone in town and she was saving up to buy it.
  • It terrified her that person chose to buy her dream phone. She wondered how he or she knew that.
  • Second, she had the habit of breaking the screens of her phones. She also wondered how come the person knew that was a habit of hers.
  • She wanted to keep the phone and not use it, but grandma persuaded her to use it and since then, there had not been a crack on the phone.
  • She made sure to take very good care of the phone. She had no idea if the person who bought the phone was watching her or not, but either way, she did not want to disappoint him or her by breaking the phone screen.
  • When she turned off the alarm, she looked around the strange room and let out heavy breath. She was in Jamal's bedroom and he was nowhere to be found.
  • "I'll be darned if he hasn't already left for work." She whispered to herself as she stepped down from the bed and headed to the bathroom.
  • She had to prepare herself for work.
  • For some odd reason, she was disappointed that he did not spend the night in his bedroom. She stayed up almost all night, hoping that he would at least show up, but there was no sign of him.
  • Yes, she was happy that nothing happened between them, but again, she was disappointed that he had left her all alone on their wedding to go and work. She wanted him to at least cuddle her and tell her beautiful things.
  • "Snap it out Adele. None of that is ever going to happen!" She reminded herself.
  • She had no idea what she had signed up for in this marriage, but she knew it wasn't going to be all roses.
  • About an hour later, she was all dressed up for work. As she left the bedroom, maids went in to clean the room and keep everything in order.
  • As she descended the staircase leading to the luxurious living room downstairs, her stomach churned when she saw Shannelle and her friend, Danielle seated in the living room, discussing God knows what.
  • At that moment, she wished she would become invisible because she knew the moment Shannelle would see her, she would taunt her about anything.
  • As she descended the staircase, the sound of her sandals on the tiles got the girls attention and she rolled her eyes as they turned to look at her.
  • "Adele" Danielle called loudly as she rose from the couch and rushed towards the staircase. Adele finished descending the stars and stood before her, waiting for Danielle to pour insults, but Danielle's reaction shocked her.
  • "Congratulations to you, Mrs. King!" Danielle said with a wife grin, but Adele knew that grin was just a facade to conceal the anger that was burning in her.
  • She could see right through Danielle's fakeness so she did not even spare her a smile.
  • "Thank you" She replied tightly as she stepped away from her presence.
  • "If I just got married and my husband left for work the first thing tomorrow morning, I would bawl my eyes out because I know there was definitely something wrong with me" Shannelle spoke out as she rose from the couch, looking at Adele straight in her eyes.
  • Adele knew that statement was for her, but she decided to ignore her.
  • "My bother is just using you!" Shannelle lashed out again but Adele did not stop to pay an ear to her or to defend herself, she just kept walking towards the door.
  • "Mrs. King!" Brand, the butler called as he walked towards her. Adele stopped on her tracks to look at the man.
  • Both Danielle and Shannelle did same.
  • "Yes Brand, how may I help you?"
  • "Young Mr. Dominick said to tell you that he has assigned a personal driver for you and he is waiting for you outside. He will take you to work and back and to any other place you want to go that needs a car"
  • "I do not need a driver, I
  • can drive on my own!" Adele objected and the old man just stood there speechless and looked at her.
  • "Brand, I'm serious, just give me my car keys, I will drive on my own" she ordered.
  • "I'm sorry Mrs. King, but your husband took the key this morning before leaving for work." The butler explained and Adele bit her lips and groaned in frustration.
  • Just then, her phone began to ring and when she saw Jamal's name on the caller ID, she instantly picked it up.
  • "Seriously Jamal! A driver? I do not need a driver!" She lashed out angrily.
  • "Good morning Adele" Jamal's calm voice came through after her scolding and guilt stabbed her heart like
  • a dagger. She had completely forgotten to greet him.
  • She let out a heavy sigh as she tried to calm herself down.
  • "Good morning." She responded in a rather grumpy tone.
  • "I knew this was going to be your reaction. I apologise for making such a decision without letting you know. However, this is not up for debate. You are to go to work and come back with the driver. Is that understood?"
  • He asked in a calm tone, but Adele could feel his seriousness.
  • She knew there was no way she could win a fight against him, so she let her pride down and decided to accept.
  • "Yes, it is"
  • "Good. I asked one of the cooks to make something for you, she's waiting for you in your car. Make sure you eat all of it before arriving at work. If you don't, there will be repercussions. Have a nice day."
  • Then the line went dead.
  • Adele stared down at the phone in her hand and then at the butler in total confusion. The old man just shrugged his shoulders and walked away.
  • She then turned to face the two girls who were standing at a distance and looking at her like she was in a movie.
  • She put her phone in her bag and smiled at them.
  • "If my husband left for work the next day after my wedding, but called to tell me he has arranged a personal chef and driver for me, I will understand that I have married a very busy man who against all odds, has me in his heart and
  • I will be grateful." She explained with a sweet smile before walking out of the house.
  • When she walked over to the car that had been assigned to her, indeed she saw a servant standing before the car with a lunch box in her hand.
  • She smiled so hard that her cheeks began to hurt.
  • She was married to the most mysterious man in the world.
