Chapter 2 The Divorce

  • A jolt ran through Maverick's entire body.
  • Sasha was indeed the biological daughter of both him and Josephine.
  • In her desperate attempt to hold onto Sasha, Josephine, who was once filled with pride and never knew the meaning of surrender, surprisingly portrayed herself in such a humble and submissive manner.
  • What have I done to cause this?
  • “People often say that couples are like birds of the same forest, flying their separate ways when disaster strikes. I suppose we've flown our separate ways now, haven't we?”
  • Josephine had been holding back for so long, but in the end, her eyes turned red, and tears started to uncontrollably stream down her face.
  • “Maverick, I remember you promising you'd treat me well, that you'd love me for a lifetime. You vowed to provide me the most wonderful life, to make me the happiest woman in the world. I didn't dare to ask for much, all I wanted was to spend a simple and joyful life with you. It seems so effortlessly achievable for others, so why does it seem so unattainable for me? I wasn't afraid of enduring hardships with you, nor was I bothered by the gossip from our relatives and classmates. All I wanted was for you to treat me and Sasha a little better!”
  • Seeing Josephine reduced to tears, Maverick felt as if his heart was shattering.
  • He wanted to embrace her, whom he had berated countless times before. But as he reached out, Josephine instinctively took a few steps back, seemingly terrified that Maverick would lay a hand on her here.
  • “I'm sorry... I'm sorry...”
  • Maverick's nails dug deeply into his flesh. Apart from apologizing, he genuinely didn't know what else to say.
  • “Let's drop it. Between us, the least valuable thing has always been apologies.”
  • As Josephine wiped away her tears, the divorce registration counter began to call out numbers.
  • “Let's go,” he said.
  • Josephine headed toward the registration desk, her expression inexplicably complex.
  • On her face, Maverick clearly saw hesitation.
  • This pitiful woman... She's still in love with me even now!
  • “Josephine!”
  • Maverick dashed over abruptly, seizing Josephine's arm.
  • “Please give me one last chance!”
  • Josephine's body gave a slight shiver.
  • Memories of the past resurfaced, dispelling her last shred of hesitation.
  • “You can't change, and you never will. I won't believe in you again,” Josephine said, a sorrowful smile gracing her lips.
  • From the moment Maverick first hit her, up until now, Josephine had truly given him countless opportunities.
  • However, a leopard can't change its spots, and neither could he change his ways.
  • “Josephine, from this moment on, I will treat you well, and also take good care of Sasha. I will also strive to earn more money—”
  • Before Maverick could finish his sentence, Josephine had already made her way to the registration desk.
  • She glanced back at Maverick, who stood unmoving. “Will you only be satisfied when I'm dead?”
  • Upon hearing those words, not just Maverick, but even the registration desk staff, furrowed their brows, casting a cold glance at Maverick.
  • They had been working here for many years and had heard every kind of reason for divorce. To see a woman pushed to such extremes, it was indeed a testament to the ultimate despicability.
  • Quietly, Maverick approached the registration desk, pulling out various documents and identification.
  • Naturally, he couldn't push Josephine to the brink of death. This woman had already endured far too many injustices and unfairness. If he were to act recklessly, she was indeed capable of doing anything.
  • By now, words were futile. Josephine was resolute about divorcing him, which seemed to be the only way out for her.
  • Since it's impossible to fix our relationship, let's start anew!
  • Maverick clenched his fist, silently vowing to himself, “Josie, I will definitely show you a different side of me. I am determined to make up for all the hardships you've endured over the years!”
  • Exiting City Hall, Josephine glanced down at the divorce papers in her hands.
  • She didn't rejoice for having rid herself of this unworthy man, nor did she feel the liberation of a fresh start. Instead, it was as if she had lost something of utmost importance, her face was incredibly pale.
  • Struggling to keep herself upright, Josephine said, “From now on, I hope you can repent your past mistakes and turn over a new leaf. Also, your parents are getting on in years and can't handle any more heartbreak. If you don't want them to know about the divorce, I can help keep it a secret.”
  • “Thank you.” Maverick nodded.
  • The fact that Josephine was still caring about him even after the divorce made Maverick truly despise himself.
  • Josephine was somewhat surprised by Maverick's attitude.
  • Logically speaking, given Maverick's temperament, he should have lost his temper out of embarrassment by now. Josephine had even braced herself for another round of blows.
  • However, Maverick merely gazed at her quietly. That kind of look left Josephine feeling utterly disoriented.
  • “Josephine!”
  • Just then, a figure came running over.
  • It was none other than Josephine's younger brother and Maverick's brother-in-law, Sebastian.
  • Following the altercation with Maverick yesterday, Sebastian's left cheek was still noticeably red and swollen, showing no signs of recovery yet.
  • “Did you two get divorced?”
  • Sebastian snatched the divorce papers from Josephine's hand, laughing heartily. “Good! It's good that you've divorced! Finally, you're free from that worthless scoundrel!”
  • After he finished speaking, Sebastian landed a kick on Maverick's stomach.
  • Stumbling a few steps, Maverick fell to the ground.
  • “Oh? Not dodging this time, are you? You're nothing but a cur. I must have been blind back then to have even considered letting my sister be with you. Look at yourself, even the beggars on the street are better than you! If I could go back in time, even if it killed me, I wouldn't have let my sister marry a piece of trash like you!” Sebastian exclaimed with a sneer.
  • Maverick remained silent, his gaze lowered.
  • He knew that Sebastian was undoubtedly waiting here because he was worried that he would lay his hands on Josephine again.
  • Sebastian wasn't wrong in calling him worthless at all.
  • Maverick even wished that Sebastian would kick him a few more times, as a way to vent the pent-up frustrations that Josephine and Sebastian had in their hearts.
  • “Listen up, Lane. You have no ties with my sister anymore. If you dare to bother her again, I'll make you regret it!”
  • Clearly, Sebastian had no intention of hitting him again. After saying his piece, he took Josephine by the hand and left.
  • Watching the taxi slowly vanish from his sight, Maverick stood up.
  • “Wait for me, Josie. This time, I promise not to let you down!”
