Chapter 6 John Elliott

  • "I'm home."
  • John puts the key on the wardrobe top and changed his slippers.
  • From the kitchen, the door came a girl with braided hair off her shoulder. She owns a sweet little face, and her belly is emerging from behind the sunflower apron.
  • "Welcome home." Madeline Russel smiled tenderly.
  • "Are you cooking?" John noticed the soup spoon in her hand. His voice is quite loud in surprise.
  • "Baby is almost seven months already; my gestation has entered the safety period. If I'm still inactive, my body will be moldy." Madeline Russel smiled ingratiatingly, till now she isn't familiar with John's intimate vocative.
  • "Safety period? Who was so tired yesterday that couldn't carry the bowl of porridge on the floor, her feet burnt? Who was the one who had a fever all night? Maddy, I don't want to scold you, but your health is very weak. Before and after pregnancy, your body has worsened at an alarming rate. Having lived with me for several months, the time you could walk around the house was merely counted by fingers. You don't listen to me; how can I keep my mind on work? You want to piss me off, don't you?"
  • Due to pregnancy, either her body or mind is too panicked, Madeline Russel's mentality has changed erratically. Getting a scolding from John, her tears have streamed down endlessly.
  • John willfully scooped Madeline Russel up and took her to her bedroom, putting her on the bed.
  • "I'm sorry..."
  • The apology is interfered with by the kiss that lightly glided on her lips. She covered her mouth and looked at John's close face.
  • "My Maddy, don't cry. I'm sorry for being harsh." John scoot closer to the bed, inclined to touch her forehead. His voice is frosty but actually, his gesture is gentle.
  • "How were you at home today? Has your fever been any better?"
  • The milder John takes care of her, the more tears rolled down her cheek.
  • "My fever is gone." She tilted her head slightly to avoid his hand.
  • John is saddling before her evasive manner.
  • "I won't constrain you when you are not ready. It's just... don't try to get away from me." Madeline Russel looked at John and quietly lowered her head.
  • At the time Alex wanted to kill her baby, John was the one who saved her and took her away. He brought her back to his house. Since then, Madeline Russel has never stepped out of the house.
  • The atmosphere between them becomes entirely down. Madeline Russel timidly speaks her decision.
  • "Alex..."
  • That is the first time she has called that man's name since she lived here.
  • "Alex is a devil. With the power he has, sooner or later he will find this place."
  • "So what?" John indifferently asked.
  • "You want to leave me? Do you want to go back beside him?"
  • "Alex wants to kill my child, why do I wish to get back?" Madeline Russel is amazed by John's stern look. She thinks that he misunderstood.
  • "I don't want to harm you. Deep down inside Alex is a cold-blooded man, he always has thousands of ways to punish and cruelly torture the people who desire to against him. You have helped me all this long, the more respectful and grateful I am, the more I cannot be detrimental to you."
  • "What can Alex do to me? Murder is illegal." John stood up in an attempt to finish this uncomfortable conversation.
  • "Maddy, you dignify another man in front of me, it means you are insulting me. You don't seem to have faith that I can protect you well."
  • Madeline Russel realized that John is getting angry. She runs after him and grabbed his shirt.
  • "I don't mean it, don't be upset..."
  • John took her delicate hand to his mouth and kissed it lightly. Madeline Russel started to step back the distant, glacial smile appeared on John's face again.
  • "From now on, you will stay in your bedroom. Your body is weak and not suitable for the kitchen and living room. At mealtime, I'll bring you food."
  • Madeline Russel panics, her pale feeble face now became even more colorless. \
  • "You are putting me under house arrest?"
  • "Maddy." John doesn't answer but asked her back.
  • "You know my feelings, don't you?"
  • Madeline Russel bit her lips in silence. "Such a good girl!" John slowly closed the door and smiled gently at her.
  • "I only asked you to stay in this room. This is how you repay me for saving your child."
  • Madeline Russel pounded on the door, her tears are rolled down endlessly.
  • "Let me out. John, you have no rights locking me up. This is not you."
  • No one responded to her plea.
  • Then, John did what he said. Like a good doctor, he knows how to take care of a pregnant woman, thoughtfully, from nutrition to psychology. The tenderness in each action made Madeline Russel comprehended that he loves her.
  • A talented doctor with a promising future falls in love with a pregnant woman without either home or money.
  • Madeline Russel can no longer procrastinate his fame and happiness.
  • If she stays beside him, Alex will quickly find out then John's career and life will be in danger.
  • And, above all others, being away for months doesn't make Madeline Russel forget that ruthless man.
  • She has loved him for so long, that love has corroded and occupied her heart entirely. It has been unforgettable and had no room for anyone else.
  • Madeline Russel thought about leaving., getting away from these two men will be the best choice for the three of them.
  • In preparation for her plan to escape, Madeline Russel vaguely asked John.
  • "Do your doctors have to work on holidays?"
  • As he gathered food for her, John has been delighted that Madeline Russel has been so docile these days. He freely answered.
  • "New Year's Eve we have to be on duty at night, but at six in the morning, I can finish work. We have two days off, this year we can celebrate the first New Year together."
  • "Aren't you going back to your family?"
  • "I want to celebrate this year with the person I love." John looked intensely at her.
  • Madeline Russel smiled confusingly. She tried to focus on the food.
  • She stealthily packed up and is ready to leave whenever she gets the chance. At this point, she realized that John bought all of her personal belongings. So, she decided not to bring anything. After leaving here she will return to her previous rented room to pick up her stuff. On New Year's Day morning, before leaving the house, John confidently gave her the house key. "Maddy, today there will be some delivery orders from the Internet, please sign for me."
  • "What did you bought so much?"
  • "Just a few small things, Including small fireworks, I can't light them with you tonight. I'll make it up for you tomorrow."
  • About to leave this tender care, Madeline Russel is also actually regretful. Her life is a chain of torture from one person to another. When she was a child, she was bullied by Emily. When they grew up, she has fallen in love with a man, and got married, got hurt by her love again and again.
  • John is the first person to be kind to her. Because of this, she doesn't refuse John's goodbye kiss. When the door closed, her heartbeat was erratic. She touched her lips and felt the warmth remained.
  • Clasping her hands, Madeline Russel didn't allow herself to step back just because of a little mildness which does not belong to her. She is too dirty and low. Happiness will never smile at someone like her.
  • Madeline Russel didn't dare to run away immediately. She still needs to receive the courier goods, as well as receive John's time checking the phone. Merely at night by hoping not to disturb her sleep, John will stop calling to control what she is doing.
  • At night, Madeline Russel opened the door, took one out, and stepped into the world that she has been hiding for months. She looked back at the apartment the last time, where she has stored many memories of the only person who brought her warmth and love.
  • "Goodbye!"
  • Madeline doesn't have enough money to take a taxi. The money she has is from the time Alex took her to the hospital for an abortion, it is only enough to take a bus.
  • When she came back to the small room where she merely lived a few days, Madeline Russel rummaged under the bottom of the flower pot and found the spare key.
  • Grabbing some necessary clothes, cash and ID rapidly, Madeline Russel continued to take the bus to the train station, then bought a ticket to the nearest city.
  • She both wants to leave this city and wants to lengthen the geographical distance between her and that cruel man too far away. She still loves Alex, even though she is fleeing, she still uses the most foolish way to memorialize someone who will never reciprocate her love.
  • "Are you going to buy a ticket? If you don't, then stand aside, many people are lining up behind." The ticket-seller looked annoyed at Madeline Russel. Being worried and insecure all day, just eating at noon and night, and continuously moving made Madeline Russel's body starts to get the fever. Her eyes are dazzled, her head is dizzy, and she forced herself to push some crumpled money through the glass frame.
  • "Sorry, sell me a ticket to the city A."
  • "You, young people now look down on the people who work publicly like us. This crumpled money can also be used." Frustrated, she put the train ticket on the table and waved her hand.
  • "Hurry away. Next."
  • Madeline Russel shyly accepts the ticket, and went to the waiting room, and waited for the bus. She didn't intend to give her lousy money, because it was the last amount of cash she got.
  • Sitting in the waiting room, the cold air from the air conditioner made Madeline Russel shiver. The fever began to make her hallucinate. Thirty minutes later, the train runs now turned into the evil face of Alex.
  • The devil Alex covered the light, his hands rest on the side of the bench behind Madeline Russel and imprisoned her in the dark. His thin lips slowly release each word.
  • "Madeline Russel, you are really good at running."
