Chapter 3 The Disownment Letter

  • "Remus, my dear!"
  • At that moment, Ivy finally regained her senses. Upon witnessing Remus's dire state, tears began to flow freely down her cheeks.
  • A mother instinctively feels her child's pain, and Ivy wasted no time sending her maid to fetch medicine. However, the unfortunate reality was that the manor was entirely out of supplies.
  • Even if they had supplies, those disdainful royal guards would never allow them to use it.
  • The atmosphere turned chaotic. The royal guards displayed no mercy, and Tammy felt a wave of relief knowing that Remus had merely lost his royal title and had been demoted to the status of a commoner.
  • If he had been labeled a branded criminal, she would have fled on the spot—worry about repaying the favor later!
  • "Quick! Change into these coarse cloth garments!"
  • The officer in charge barked orders, tossing each of them a rough burlap tunic. The residents of War God's Estate were accustomed to wearing luxurious silks and satins, which were quite valuable.
  • They couldn't take their fine clothing with them, and despite their reluctance, everyone complied, reluctantly donning the rough burlap garments.
  • Remus was the only exception. His clothing was already soaked in blood, so changing was of little consequence.
  • Once everyone was dressed, they were unceremoniously shoved out of War God's Estate, only to be met by a hail of rotten vegetables and eggs hurled by the townspeople.
  • "Did they really believe that winning a battle would make them kings?"
  • "Serves them right! These officials value lives as if they were worthless; let's give them what they truly deserve!"
  • "I curse them to suffer!"
  • The cruel shouts rang in their ears. Tammy had just joined them, so the impact was not as severe for her, but the others from War God's Estate felt utterly defeated, especially Remus.
  • He had devoted himself to safeguarding the common people, only to be greeted with their scorn and hatred. Overwhelmed by anger and despair, he lost consciousness.
  • "Remus!"
  • Daniel, carrying Remus, panicked. Tammy quickly stepped in to shield them from the onslaught of rotten vegetables, but the residents of War God's Estate continued to glare at her with contempt.
  • Everyone was too consumed by their own despair, their pampered bodies unable to endure such treatment, and they wept bitterly.
  • The journey out of the city was excruciating; by the time they reached the city gate, they were battered and bruised.
  • The officers escorting them were not royal guards. In addition to the residents of War God's Estate, several other families were being exiled for various offenses.
  • A crowd of several hundred made their way out of the city, eventually arriving at the pavilion outside. Here, their family members had come to bid them farewell, offering their only glimmer of hope.
  • The officers made no effort to intervene; after all, the more money these families provided, the more would line the officers' own pockets. Thus, they deliberately slowed the process.
  • Everyone waited in anticipation for their loved ones, and one by one, the families of the women came, bringing money for their journey.
  • Among them were members of the Williamsons, who held Gloria in high esteem. Her mother had sent a substantial package.
  • Melissa's expression brightened considerably upon seeing it. With the package in hand, Gloria felt a sense of validation amid her disarray, casting a deliberate glance at Tammy.
  • "It seems my mother still cares for me, unlike some people who are about to leave without a single relative in sight."
  • Her comment was unmistakably meant to mock Tammy. Unfazed, Tammy gently wiped Remus's face as he lay unconscious.
  • "It's the Waltons!"
  • The crowd was buzzing with a mix of excitement and dread as the Waltons' carriage appeared, igniting whispers among the onlookers.
  • Melissa couldn't help but smirk bitterly. Who would have imagined that they would sink so low, relying on others for aid?
  • As the carriage stopped, a young maid stepped out, someone unfamiliar to Tammy, who couldn't recall ever seeing this girl before.
  • The maid carried no packages; instead, she produced a plain white sheet of paper from her sleeve.
  • "Ms. Walton, you chose to marry into War God's Estate, but now that calamity has struck, Mr. Walton , despite his reluctance, has been compelled to cut ties for the sake of the other young ladies and gentlemen in the household.
  • "This is your disownment letter. Mr. Walton wishes for you to understand that you are no longer connected to the Waltons!"
  • This was undoubtedly a cruel kick while they were down. Had the original character been present, she would have been livid, and it was no wonder she was depicted as unstable in the original tale.
  • The people from War God's Estate gaped in shock at the insolent young maid, their spirits plummeting. Donald Walton truly was the cruelest of them all!
  • While the rest remained speechless, Tammy took a deep breath and accepted the disownment letter with calmness.
  • She turned to the maid and declared firmly, "Inform Mr. Walton that regardless of whether I live or die, or if I am poor or rich, that will have nothing to do with the Waltons from this moment on."
  • Tammy felt incredulous. A modern practitioner of traditional medicine, how had she ended up in such a precarious situation? One day, she vowed, she would make the Waltons grovel at her feet!
  • "Good luck with that!" The maid retorted smugly as she climbed back into the carriage, which rattled away from the crowd.
  • It took a moment for the stunned onlookers to collect themselves.
  • Gloria shot a disdainful look at Tammy, trying to stir up trouble. "I thought Tammy's family was coming to offer gifts; who would have thought they'd arrive to disown her instead!"
  • Her words struck like fuel added to fire, instantly igniting the tension in the air.
  • Melissa, who had been holding her emotions in check, glared at Tammy, her expression darkening.
  • Members of the second and third branches of the family looked down their noses at Tammy. Callie Bennett, Melissa's daughter-in-law, couldn't resist joining in on the mocking, sneering at her.
  • "It seems Gloria is right; you really are a jinx. The moment you entered this house, you brought bad luck upon War God's Estate.
  • "Now your own family has severed ties with you—you're a disaster!
  • "I don't think it's just Tammy; the whole main family branch has dragged down the second and third branches, and you should be held accountable!"
  • Emily Grant, Melissa's third daughter-in-law, shot a frosty glance at the unconscious Remus. Without him, their family wouldn't be suffering like this.
  • "My mother is right; if it weren't for Remus, we wouldn't have been exiled."
  • "I refuse to be exiled! It's all Remus and Tammy's fault—this is on you!"
  • The children from the second and third branches launched accusations at the main branch. Melissa stood by, watching the spectacle unfold, clearly biased toward her side.
  • Ivy, already in a fragile state, nearly collapsed from the stress. If it weren't for Daniel, who was carrying Remus, the hot-headed young man might have exploded.
  • Tammy's icy gaze swept over the scornful faces of her relatives. "When my husband was granted his title, where were you all to blame the main branch? Now that things have turned sour, it's all our fault? You think you can shake us down? Not a chance!"
  • Her sharp words reached Remus, who had just started to regain consciousness. His eyelids fluttered; he hadn't anticipated that this cunning woman would wield such a sharp tongue.
  • But she was right!
  • With great effort, he opened his eyes, feeling excruciating pain in his lower body. Yet, none of those who had once relied on his support seemed concerned for him.
  • The nature of humanity was truly terrifying and entirely predictable.
  • "Remus!"
  • Ivy staggered to her feet and rushed to his side, tears streaming down her face.
  • She was a beauty whose only skill seemed to be crying, and Tammy felt a headache brewing. Meanwhile, Gloria seethed at Tammy's words.
  • Just as she was about to retaliate, the officer overseeing the situation suddenly barked, "Everyone shut up and keep moving!"
