Chapter 7 Marrying Into The Langford Family 7
- Veronica curled her lips into a smile and took Richard's hand. “Dad, don't worry. I got it.”
- “Veronica, I've wronged your mom and you,” Richard uttered sadly.
- “Dad, don't say that. Well, it's not like I have a boyfriend anyway, so I'm free to marry anyone I want! Besides, it's better to spend time with a comatose patient than a scheming person.”
- Richard had no idea what Veronica was insinuating, but he nodded firmly and told her, “You should quit school. There's no need for you to continue studying.”
- At once, Veronica stated her disapproval. “No, Dad. I don't want to quit. I want to continue my studies.”
- In response, Richard let out a helpless sigh. His voice sounded weary as he said, “It's the Langford family who wants you to quit. They say you shouldn't put yourself in the limelight after marrying into the Langford family.”
- “Dad, don't worry. I'll talk to them myself. It's late, so you should go to bed.” Veronica nudged him toward his bedroom.
- “Alright,” Richard answered. His lips twitched, but he chose not to say anything in the end.
- Back in her room, Veronica sat in front of her desk and stared at the photo frame blankly. Tears streamed down her cheeks as though a dam had burst.
- She sprawled on the desk and wailed sorrowfully. Seth's gentleness and thoughtfulness over the past few years were nothing but a lie, as he ended up cheating on her with her own sister.
- Veronica didn't know if she was upset over the fact that Seth didn't love her, or that Seth was in love with Violet.
- But the one thing she was sure of was that she only wanted to vent her feelings for now. The sound of tears gushing out from her eyes and trickling down onto the ground was unusually loud in the quiet night.
- Outside the door, Richard heard her wails and couldn't stop the tears from flowing down his cheeks. Veronica has a gentle demeanor, just like her mom. She must've agreed to marry into the Langford family so I won't be put in a tight spot...
- His hands were trembling as he headed downstairs with the tray of food in his hands. In the living room, he lit a cigarette and puffed on it quietly. Slowly, thick plumes of smoke filled the space.
- The next morning, Veronica was still asleep when someone knocked on her door.
- Her eyes were stinging as she woke up and called out in a raspy voice, “What is it?”
- “Ms. Veronica, the Langford family is here to deliver the betrothal gift. Mr. Saville wants you to wash up before coming down.”
- “I...” Veronica's voice was hoarse after crying all night. She wanted to say something, but there was a burning sensation in her throat.
- “Ms. Veronica, are you okay?” Lydia's concerned voice sounded outside the door.
- “I'm fine, Lydia. My throat feels slightly unwell, that's all. You can head down now. I'll join them after taking a shower,” responded Veronica.
- She heard Lydia's receding footsteps as the helper made her way down the stairs.
- Standing up, Veronica headed to the bathroom. Seeing her weary face and swollen eyes in the mirror, she took a quick shower and put on some makeup to hide her haggard complexion.
- After putting on a white knee-length dress, she headed downstairs.
- Willow was waiting for her in the living room. Veronica smiled at her and greeted, “Good morning, Mrs. Langford.”
- “You didn't sleep well last night, did you? You look very pale,” Willow commented out of concern.
