Chapter 1 The Coffin Lid Could No Longer Be Held Down

  • In Lofbury of Xucror, there was the Montague Manor.
  • The night had grown deep, yet the lights at home still shone brilliantly.
  • Abraham Montague lay in his sickbed, his body growing increasingly frail.
  • After the onset of autumn, a chill swept over him, and he even coughed up blood.
  • Now, he was lying weakly on the bed, looking at the man in a suit and leather shoes beside him. “Sebastian, are you willing to do what I just asked?”
  • Sebastian Yandell, who was twenty-seven years old that year, was an orphan. He had been abandoned by his parents at an orphanage when he was a child. Later, he was adopted by Abraham, and grew up alongside his granddaughter.
  • After graduation, he joined Montague Group and stayed by Abraham's side. He was the CEO of the company and also the most trusted person of Abraham.
  • Even if it was to repay a favor, he would not refuse any request from Abraham.
  • “Grandpa Abraham, I promise you, I will marry Lilibeth.”
  • Lilibeth Montague, who was twenty-three years old this year, was the heiress of Montague Group. She was renowned for her haughty and indulgent personality.
  • In Xucror, there was no one who did not know of this young lady.
  • Because she was the only child in the Montague family, Abraham doted on his granddaughter excessively, to the point where she was utterly spoiled.
  • Upon graduating from university, she spent her days aimlessly, constantly seeking out trouble and stirring up mischief whenever she stepped out.
  • This greatly distressed Abraham.
  • Sebastian leaned back in his chair, thinking about the girl who was to become his wife. His eyes flickered as he said softly, “But she is unwilling to marry me.”
  • “As long as you're willing, I have a way to make her agree to marry you,” Abraham said solemnly.
  • The young lady of the Montague family had come home late again. Lilibeth, with her delicate features and slender figure, was most noticeable for her pair of spirited eyes.
  • She, pampered and spoiled, carried herself with the elegance of a princess, and of course, the temperament of one as well.
  • She swung her bag on her arm and hummed a tune as she entered the living room.
  • The butler had been waiting for quite a while. “Ms. Lilibeth, Mr. Abraham is looking for you.”
  • “Grandpa hasn't gone to bed yet? Staying up late is bad for one's health. This old man doesn't know a thing about taking care of himself! How could he stay up late like us young people?”
  • Lilibeth quickly teased her dear grandfather.
  • The door swung open, revealing her adorable little face. “Good evening, my dear grandpa!” she greeted.
  • Lilibeth was the best at fooling people, with a deceptive little face that often left others disoriented by her smooth talking.
  • Every time she was about to be scolded by Abraham, she could dissipate his anger entirely with her amazing “speeches.”
  • “Come in.”
  • Lilibeth entered her grandfather's bedroom, only to see Sebastian standing by her grandfather's side again, which instantly ruined her good mood.
  • She secretly rolled her eyes.
  • Sebastian knew that this young lady of wealth had prejudices against him, and he was already prepared for her to berate him for a while.
  • “Lilibeth, you should marry Sebastian.”
  • Lilibeth, the person in question, was stunned for three seconds. “What? Who am I supposed to marry?”
  • Abraham coughed and reiterated, “You should marry Sebastian.”
  • “No way! I refuse to marry him, Grandpa! Have you lost your senses? I'm starting to suspect you're his actual grandfather! You've given him the position of CEO, and now you want to hand your precious granddaughter over to him too? Why don't you offer yourself to him instead? If anyone should marry him, it should be you! I'm in the prime of my youth here! I won't marry him!”
  • Abraham was so infuriated that he broke into a violent cough. “Do you feel wronged marrying Sebastian?”
  • “Someone of his status is not worthy of me!” Lilibeth said arrogantly, turning her head. Her beautiful face was etched with impossibility.
  • “I think you are the one who isn't worthy of Sebastian. How are you superior to him? In terms of education, capability, and character, he surpasses you a hundredfold. It's you who isn't worthy of him.”
  • Displeased at her grandfather for looking down on her, Lilibeth pointed at Sebastian in agitation and said, “How could someone of his status be worthy of me? After all, I am the young lady of the Montague family, and he is nothing more than a mere worker in our household!”
  • Abraham was so infuriated that his hands trembled. He clutched his chest, coughing so violently that he was on the verge of vomiting.
  • In haste, Sebastian quickly handed Abraham a tissue.
  • When the tissue was taken away, Abraham surprisingly coughed up blood.
  • Upon seeing the crimson bloodstains, Lilibeth became anxious. It was only then that she realized the gravity of the situation.
  • Her grandfather was all she had left in this world.
  • She pushed Sebastian aside and, out of habit, tossed her crossbody bag into his arms. Sebastian, long accustomed to this capricious young lady, caught it smoothly and held it naturally in his hands.
  • Lilibeth sat by the bed, frightened, patting her grandfather's back. Unconsciously, tears began to stream down her face. In a tearful voice, she said, “Grandpa, please don't scare me! The fortune teller said you would live to one hundred and eight years old without any problems, so please don't cough up blood!”
  • She watched as her grandfather coughed up blood again, and Lilibeth was scared into crying loudly. “What should I do, Grandpa? Please stop coughing up blood, I'm scared you'll die! Please stop coughing, Grandpa!” she sobbed.
  • The butler suggested, “Ms. Lilibeth, there's an old saying in our family that when someone is critically ill, we should hold a joyous event to bring good luck.”
  • As Lilibeth cried, she suddenly stopped. In a whimper, she said, “B-But I'm afraid my late grandma would get mad if I find Grandpa another companion!”
  • Spurt! Abraham couldn't hold back any longer, suddenly spewing the blood from his mouth all over the ground.
  • Blood splattered onto Sebastian's shiny leather shoes.
  • Even Sebastian, who was usually so composed, was nearly driven to laughter by her single remark.
  • Abraham looked at his granddaughter and said, “It's you who are marrying Sebastian to bring joy, not me taking a new wife.”
  • Even if he hadn't died, his granddaughter's actions would have been enough to infuriate him to death.
  • “But I am unwilling to sacrifice my happiness for you, Grandpa!” Lilibeth exclaimed with a sob.
  • Abraham continued to cough.
  • In the following days, Lilibeth dared not go anywhere, choosing to stay by her grandfather's side. Every time she mentioned not wanting to get married Abraham would cough up blood. He even fainted from anger once.
  • Eventually, Lilibeth pouted and agreed reluctantly. “I'll get married, okay? Please don't cough up blood over it, Grandpa!”
  • Ever since Lilibeth agreed to get married, Abraham's health had been improving day by day.
  • In the blink of an eye, two months had passed, and the wedding day had arrived.
  • Lilibeth sat in the bridal room, being attended to by others as they did her makeup. Thinking of the man she was about to marry, she propped her chin up with both hands, showing a clear sign of distaste.
  • Ever since she was born, there had always been a boy five years older than her by her side, telling her what she could and couldn't do.
  • Abraham criticized her as well. “Lilibeth, you should learn from Sebastian. You ranked last in your exams this year, while Sebastian is the top student in the entire school.”
  • When they were children in school, all his love letters were passed to him through her.
  • It was during middle school that Lilibeth had a falling out with Sebastian, as she discovered that all her friends were only hanging out with her because of Sebastian.
  • For various reasons, she looked down upon her newlywed husband who had been living at her house and had grown up with her since childhood.
  • “The groom has arrived to welcome the bride. Hurry and throw the candies!”
  • The entrance was bustling with activity, followed by the resounding boom of ceremonial fireworks.
  • Surrounded by a crowd, Sebastian was ushered into the grand hall of the Montague family's residence. He held a bouquet of roses in his hands as he made his way to the bride's room.
  • Upon opening the door, it was as if a beam of light had shone in.
  • The blinding light made it impossible for others to keep their eyes open, yet he was reluctant to close his own.
  • At the foot of the bed stood a girl, as pristine as a princess, the girl who had been by his side since childhood.
  • Her beauty was akin to the most dazzling pearl in the world, more delicate than the rose in her hand, surpassing all the beauty in the world.
  • Sebastian's hand tightened, as he walked toward Lilibeth, who was dressed in a wedding gown.
  • Sebastian was a noble young man from the Xucror, the object of everyone's pursuit.
  • His cheekbones looked cold and firm, his gaze deep and profound. Standing at a height of six feet, he was just the right size to perfectly envelope Lilibeth's petite frame.
  • Women were attracted to his looks, while men valued his abilities.
  • Everyone said that Abraham had a vision for the future. Over twenty years ago, he had adopted this boy who was full of potential.
  • Under Sebastian's leadership, Montague Group reached new heights.
  • The financial crisis led to the bankruptcy of thousands of companies. Yet, under Sebastian's leadership, Montague Group broke through the constraints, catapulting to become the wealthiest entity in Xucror.
  • Onlookers were filled with envy. Sure enough, the Montague family finally left the best man for their own heiress.
  • Everyone felt that Lilibeth was not a good match for him. How could Sebastian marry a woman like her, who was known for her arrogant and domineering personality, always causing trouble, and having a bad disposition?
