Chapter 1 A Difficult Life Without Money

  • "Mrs. Walton, take this money. I think it's almost enough to make the down payment for Hunter."
  • After the ceremony, Victor Frost took out a bank card and gave it to his mother-in-law, Mabel Walton.
  • "It must have been quite challenging for you to save up this amount of money," she said sarcastically.
  • Victor was annoyed by her tone. He had been working tirelessly every day to save enough money to buy a car for his brother-in-law, Hunter Holden. He had already used up all his savings, yet Mabel didn't even sound grateful.
  • Victor pulled his wife, Rachel Holden, out of the restaurant.
  • "Rachie, is your mom trying to imply something? Does she think the money isn't enough?" Victor couldn't help but complain. "Your brother is a good-for-nothing who only knows how to hang out with those useless friends of his. Why does he even need a car? And to top it off, he wants a BMW. He's so greedy."
  • He couldn't stop himself. "All he cares about these days is comparing himself to those useless friends and boosting his ego. If we actually buy him a car, he'll become so arrogant that he'll think we're all pushovers, don't you think?"
  • Victor was furious, and his voice trembled as he complained. But Rachel glared at him and asked, "Are you finished?"
  • Rachel, standing at five and a half feet tall with porcelain skin, exuded an enchanting aura. She was a successful businesswoman who ran her own company and was one of those rare beauties.
  • She had known Victor since their university days, and after they graduated, the Holden family wanted to find a son-in-law for their daughter. That's how Victor became part of the family. He had been a loving husband ever since their marriage three years ago, and his love for her was immeasurable.
  • "Babe, am I not speaking the truth?" Victor tried to appease her, but Rachel shrugged him off.
  • "My brother has been living with relatives since he was young, and he never really experienced the love he deserved. What's wrong with him wanting a BMW? Let me make this clear. Even if he wanted a Ferrari, you would have to find a way to buy it for him!"
  • Victor suddenly felt all his pent-up anger dissipate into thin air. He almost exploded in anger, but he decided to keep his words to himself.
  • Hunter, being his brother-in-law, always bullied him because Victor was an outsider who married into the family.
  • This time, Hunter came up with a brilliant idea. He claimed that owning a BMW was the first step towards success.
  • Mabel cherished her son to an excessive degree. As soon as Hunter made that outrageous request, Mabel decided that Victor was burdened with the task of buying her beloved son a BMW. There was no discussion at all.
  • Victor couldn't even afford a regular car, let alone a BMW.
  • He had sold most of his valuable possessions just to gather enough money for his brother-in-law's request. He even worked as a delivery man in his free time, overexerting himself. That's why he had lost weight. Finally, he had to borrow five hundred thousand dollars from friends just to meet the target.
  • When he saw how heartless his wife was, his heart sank.
  • "Babe, your mother only finds fault in me! No matter what I do, it seems like I'm always in the wrong! And don't get me started on her disrespectful son. What about living on our own? Let's talk to her about this," Victor said, shaking Rachel's shoulders.
  • "It's impossible for us to move out. If you don't like it, move out on your own!" Rachel's face darkened.
  • Victor was visibly stunned. He ventured uneasily, "Babe, what are you saying?"
  • Rachel turned around and glared at him with a hideous expression. There was anger in her eyes.
  • "Nowadays, I can't help but regret marrying you. Was I blind to marry such a useless man?"
  • Since they got married, Rachel's company had been the main source of income for the family.
  • There were some complications in her company at the moment. On top of that, she saw how capable her friends' husbands were, which only fueled her dissatisfaction. Now, Victor was complaining so much just because he was tasked with buying a BMW for her brother. It seemed trivial to her. This incident made her lose all faith in their marriage.
  • "Before I married you, I had so many suitors. But in the end, I chose you because of your thick skin and shamelessness. Now I regret everything."
  • Victor quickly interrupted her, saying, "But those men were no good! They only loved you for your looks, and I can guarantee they would never appreciate you like I do. I have loved you wholeheartedly! I have been your guardian angel throughout our three years of marriage. Can't you feel my love?"
  • However, Rachel could no longer feel such a trivial emotion. Since her company started to decline, she longed for a capable husband who could help her out of this situation. Instead, all she got was Victor, who couldn't be of any assistance.
  • "You're only thinking about yourself. Aren't you tired of trying to win my favor every day? You bring me meals every day, wash my feet every day, drive me to work every day... I can't even stand the sight of your face anymore!"
  • Rachel had always been proud, even from a young age. Her pride prevented her from seeing someone like Victor as her equal.
  • "And what can your love do? Can your love buy me expensive bags? Can your love buy me a seaside villa? Can your love buy my brother a luxury car?"
  • Rachel stared hard at Victor and gritted her teeth. "Your love is completely worthless!"
  • Victor felt a melancholic sorrow slowly fill his heart. He couldn't believe that in Rachel's eyes, he was such a useless man.
  • "Babe, please give me some time, okay? We will become wealthy very soon!" Victor reached out to hold her hand, but she evaded his touch.
  • "Just a few days ago, you were boasting about the wonderful life you have now by marrying into a wealthy family. And now you expect me to believe that we will suddenly become rich? Do you really think I will trust you?"
  • "Babe, I'm telling you, have faith in me."
  • Before he could finish his sentence, Rachel interrupted him and declared, "Let's get a divorce!"
  • Immediately, Victor felt a rush of dizziness.
  • He could tolerate Mabel and Hunter's bullying. He could even change himself if Rachel didn't like him. But he had never considered the possibility of her wanting a divorce.
  • "Babe, just give me a little more time. I will become a capable man, just like you always wanted!"
  • "I don't think so. I've suffered enough. If we continue this marriage, we will only drag each other down. You don't need to serve us anymore, and you don't need to do those degrading jobs. I don't wish for you to become rich anytime soon. Instead, I will find a wealthy man to help my family. This is the best way to end our suffering. Goodbye..."
  • Rachel then turned around and disappeared into the restaurant.
  • Her words pierced his heart like countless knives.
  • He had always loved her. How could she say such cruel words to his face? Since the day they got married, Victor had been trying his best to provide a good life for them. But it seemed that time had run out.
  • Was his wife really divorcing him just because he couldn't afford to buy a BMW for her brother?
  • Marriage was so fragile.
  • Or perhaps Rachel had been suffering for too long? Maybe the incident with the BMW was just the final straw. It triggered her outburst.
  • He remembered how modest and gentle Rachel used to be when they were university students. It pained him deeply.
  • He wanted to talk to Rachel again, but he saw her coming out with Mabel.
  • They were discussing going to a salon, laughing together. As they walked past him, they glanced at him as if he were repulsive.
  • "Rachie, even though Mr. Lowry is quite overweight, his net worth is in the hundreds of millions. I can't express how much he wants to meet you after I told him about you. If you're not interested, I can introduce you to Mr. Carpenter. Don't worry, I have all the connections. Don't waste your best years on a useless man."
  • "Mum, I understand..."
  • Victor overheard their conversation and felt his dignity crushed. In that moment, he lost all motivation to even attempt to talk to Rachel.
  • Tears began to stream down his face. As he wiped them away, he noticed a message from his friend, urging him to repay the money he had borrowed.
  • He let out a long sigh. It's truly difficult to live without money in this world!
  • He continued to trudge along, lamenting his situation. Then he arrived at a place...
