- My blood goes from simmering to boiling, and I give him a smoldering once-over. Likewise, Ashton does the same. I place my holstered gun and radio on his dresser.
- Out of habit, I scan the room with my peripheral vision: gray curtains drawn shut, a small bookshelf, walls made of deep red brick, a full-sized bed adorned with a burnt-orange comforter. Delicate white lights hang from the wooden rafters, casting a dim glow. It's the only source of illumination in the room.
