  • Lilly clutched her phone tightly. The call had connected, but there was no sound on the other end. She remembered the first time she dialed this number from the police station; it had been disconnected. Now, though the number wasn't disconnected, the silence on the other end made her nervous, for this subtle change brought an overwhelming sense of uncertainty.

Her voice trembled as she asked, "Excuse me, are you my uncle, Gilbert Crawford? My mom is Jean Crawford, and… I'm Lilly…"
  • She had finished speaking, but the other end remained silent. Tears began to blur her vision, but she pressed on, saying, "I'm in Briarcliff… on the Bayshore Highway, about six miles from the Brookstone toll station… Our car crashed and rolled down a hill.
