- What she really fucking wanted was a cigarette. Taking a bath had given her an opportunity to indulge in her vaping habit, but there was a weight and harshness to the effects of combustible tobacco that seemed to satisfy her on a much more visceral level. It was clear which method of nicotine administration was a facsimile of the other, borne out of convenience, social stigma, and a veneer of health consciousness and not out of sheer satisfaction. For that, smoking was unmatched as far as she was concerned.
- She didn't have her own cigarettes, however, and certainly wasn't willing to drive somewhere to buy them in the middle of the night and risk being caught by a snooping David. Her current situation did clarify her future ambitions, which were to buy her own cigarettes tomorrow and never have to deal with this problem again. She sighed heavily, agitation and restlessness wrestling at near even odds.
- The soft hum of a car engine pulling up in front of the house and then the sound of car door shutting pulled Danielle out of her frustration spiral with a spark of excitement materializing in her chest. The front door being opened quietly and then closed, followed by the soft padding of footsteps up the stairs confirmed her hope that Emily had gotten home.
