Instead of breaking into a confessional as Danielle was hoping, Emily's lips curled into a devious smile that she didn't recognize on her daughter's face. It wasn't quite playful or coy, it had an unmistakable harshness that caused a slight shiver to race through her. She knew that whatever she was about to say, wasn't going to be from the part of her daughter that she had come to know over the last 18-years. She was going to be speaking to the version of her daughter that had surfaced after she had gone off to college and was probably being concealed from her for far earlier than that.
"I know you stole one of my cigarettes last week," Emily said slyly.
To be frank, this was perhaps the last thing she expected Emily to say, and it felt like it knocked the breath right out of her lungs. She quickly tried to scan her mind for something to say but realized immediately that Emily had been sitting on this information and had her dead to rights.
