Chapter 6 Family Gathering
- For the rest of that time, John Foster had come to terms with the fact that he could sense Emily's innermost thoughts. This method worked well. If she intended to stir up trouble, he would be cautious as a result. He hadn't finished his work because Emily's thoughts were too loud.
- John stepped out of the car and held out his arm. After a million ideas raced through Emily's mind in that moment, she raised that arm with both hands and asked, "Should I support you?"
- John: "Ahem."
- He was only a little older!
- He looped Emily's arm, and the two of them entered together—a striking couple.
- The old house looked even more luxurious, especially in this setting. Dozens of eyes looked over at once as soon as they stepped into the hallway. Emily's tiny heart pounded frantically.
- [God, you really scared me!]
- If it hadn't been for her past life experience, she probably wouldn't have been able to stand steadily.
- She smiled shyly as she turned her head to consider this mission.
- A malevolent stare scowled over. When Emily turned to look, she saw a small child with bloodshot eyes, biting her bottom lip lightly and wearing an expression that suggested she was going to cry but wasn't.
- [Why is she giving me that look? Is it my cheap husband's ex-wife? A covert fan? Stupid! Is it a betrayal of a fiancée?]
- "She's not an arbitrary guess; she's a cousin."
- "Oh? Oh!"
- [How is it strange that he knows what I'm thinking?]
- John acknowledged Emily's suspicious behavior as well and told himself to proceed with greater caution.
- Emily had never met any of John's relatives before. It had to be said that the members of John's family were all very attractive.
- They all appeared to be difficult to get along with, even though they all had false smiles on their faces.
- John's family was large in number, but surprisingly, there were not many children among them.
- The elderly man in the head seat slammed his cane angrily and sat down next to John.
- "You really are aware that you should return!"
- "Mum, Dad."
- Emily started to say "Dad," but the man cut her off, saying, "Don't call me Dad, I'm not your dad."
- Emily muttered, "Uncle, hello," in obedience.
- Everyone: "..."
- The lady beside him was graceful and elegant; she patted his hand gently and then removed her wrist bracelet to place it on Emily's hand. "Good child, I'm giving this to you because I don't have any nice gifts prepared for our first meeting," she said. Keep your eyes off of it.
- The people around her instantly changed their expressions upon seeing this scene, especially the red-eyed little girl who appeared to be about to say something but was interrupted by the older woman standing next to her.
- Emily could care less about that. Her words, "Thank you, Mom," were sweet.
- Everyone: "..."
- John's mouth corner quivered.
- The old man had a bad expression too. What was going on, calling one mom and one uncle?
- But he really didn't think well of this motherless woman, so changing her again was out of the question. She was of no use to John.
- "Ai, she's a decent kid. John has a chilly disposition, so you'll need to give him more. You're the first person he's brought back after all these years. It's been a while since I've seen him this joyful."
- [In the novel, shouldn't the butler say these things? It's true that lacking emotion is a disease that requires medical attention.]
- Emily cast a sidelong glance in John's direction. And how could one tell he was happy from this coffin face?
- John: "Ahem."
- "If you ask me, John is also old enough, you two should hurry and have a child," interrupted a second married woman.
- Unexpectedly, the rich family was also pressed for a child. Emily gave a small smile but remained silent.
- John stated coldly, "Aunt doesn't have to be concerned about this. I've heard that Uncle and the new secretary have recently become very close."
- Aunt's expression changed immediately.
- Uncle Daniel Foster rushed to clarify, saying, "That child comes from a very unfortunate background. I'm just keeping a closer eye on her."
- "Yes, watching out for her all the way into bed," Aunt humped coldly.
- A furrowed brow told Daniel Foster, "Are you talking gibberish?"
- With a shrug, Aunt remained silent, indicating her reluctance to disclose her personal affairs.
- Emily gave a hearty thumbs up as well. This guy revealed everything with such ruthlessness.
- The other side of the table laughed, and Emily noticed a dapper man smiling and blinking at her.
- Emily: "..."
- [Flower peacock, tsk.]
- John's mouth corner turned up just a little.
- "Big brother." The man uttered those words.
- "My second brother." John gave a small nod.
- Emily didn't recognize this person because the novel didn't give much information about John's family. However, she sensed he wasn't a good man right away.
- The family feast began, and everyone followed the rule of silence while eating, resulting in an extremely quiet meal.
- Emily felt very uneasy about this.
- Upon reflection, she decided to peel a shrimp and place it in John's bowl since she needed to maintain the appearance of a loving couple.
- Then she said, "Dear, eat the shrimp," in a pitch-low voice.
- Emily realized that she might have gone overboard as soon as she said the words. With that voice, she nearly sent herself away right then and there.
- "Big brother's not a big fan of shrimp!" The girl made a loud declaration, appearing to have pink eyes instead of red ones.
- Emily's expression changed immediately.
- [Oh no, I forgot about the gold master dad's tastes. I hope my pay isn't deducted by him!]
- With a faint smile, John took the shrimp in his chopsticks and carefully placed it in his mouth, muttering, "Yum."
- Emily's face flushed instantly.
- [Devil!]
- She could have been almost seduced by him if she hadn't known he wasn't interested in her.
- For a little while, that girl chewed her food angrily, giving Emily the impression that she really wanted to bite her.
- With the possible exception of Emily, everyone ate the meal distractedly and poorly.
- Emily went to the garden after dinner to help with her digestion.
- The fault lay with the delicious food. Her stomach swelled from not being able to resist. She had to look bad all the time to keep her reputation intact.
- Although there were a lot of mosquitoes, the garden was large and lovely.
- Clap! Emily dispatched the 38th mosquito of the evening that was going to bite her.
- "Pfft, have you never had any really good food?" The pink-eyed girl said it with contempt.
- With a sincere nod, Emily answered, "Yes, never."
- The girl was at a loss for words after hearing this response and didn't know how to react.
- She threatened, "I'm telling you, I'll never recognize you. Amelia and Brother John are a match made in heaven!"
- "Oh."
- "Avoid getting inspired. Amelia still hasn't returned. Big Brother will undoubtedly throw you out when she does."
- "Oh."
- "You, that evil one!" The girl lost her temper and stormed off.
- Emily sighed. The earth and heavens bore witness to her innocence!
- Tsk, Living in a wealthy family was indeed risky and challenging.
- "Isn't that sad, sister-in-law?"
- At some point, Emily looked up at the voice and saw that her cheap second brother had come out to watch the fun from the balcony.
- It sounded strange to hear him refer to her as her sister-in-law.
- Though she had no evidence, she suspected he was trying to woo her.
- With the 10 million dollars on her mind, Emily stepped back cautiously. "Is there anything really wrong?"
- "Is sister-in-law not concerned that big brother might... reignite past romances?"
- Emily smiled coyly, her eyes spinning. "How are you able to speak so coldly, Aiya? I'm the only person in this life that John will love, he said. I accept him."
- Joseph's face twisted momentarily.
- Could his distant, industrious older brother genuinely say things like that?
- Emily realized she was sharing a room with her cheap husband after returning to her room.
- Fortunately, there was a large sofa in the room.
- From the bathroom came the sound of running water. Since Emily had never shared a room with a man before, she was a little uneasy and pulled out her phone to play games.
- The water eventually stopped. She glanced over, quickly put down her phone, and saw John wrapped tightly in a robe.
- Emily: "..."
- A moment of disillusionment passed through her eyes.
- [as one might anticipate from a noble and pious president. Tightly wrapped.]
- [Laughing, I wonder if he's got abs.]
- John adjusted his waistband slightly, but covertly.
- Was Emily, the previous one, also like this?
- John lapsed into thought.
