• Vanessa sat in her chair, staring out the wide office window as her thoughts ran wild. No matter how hard she tried, the questions in her head refused to quiet down. What if her enemies were already ahead of her? What if they had everything planned out while she was still trying to piece things together? Could she still take control, or was it already too late? She didn’t have the answers, and that left her feeling uneasy.
• The loud buzz of her phone snapped her out of her thoughts. She looked at the screen. It was an unknown number. Vanessa hesitated for a second, her thumb hovering over the screen. After a short pause, she sighed and answered, pressing the phone to her ear without saying a word.
• A voice came through the line, smooth but laced with mockery. “Vanessa, I see you didn’t appreciate the little present I sent to you weeks ago.”
