Chapter 12 Let Her Go
- Inside the office, Jeremy, the head of the National Guard Bureau, was enjoying his coffee when a flustered officer burst in, calling out loudly. “Chief Fuson, Mr. Wozniak is here!”
- “Mr. Wozniak? That Mr. Wozniak?” asked Jeremy.
- “The Mr. Wozniak from the downtown building.”
- Jeremy's expression subtly shifted. As the top figure in Hofcaster, Zachariah and his associates rarely interfered with the National Guard Bureau's affairs. What could Mr. Wozniak possibly be doing here now? Could it be that he was sent by Zachariah?
- “Who have you all arrested recently? Tell me about it.” As Jeremy headed toward the entrance, he began to ask questions.
- He wanted to fully understand the situation so he could devise a suitable response in his mind.
- The police officer furrowed his brows slightly, expressing his doubt. “I haven't heard of anyone being arrested in the past couple of days, nor are there any records of police dispatch.”
- “Oh yeah, I heard earlier that it seems Captain Roxanne has apprehended the murderer who wreaked havoc at the Quimby family's place a few days ago.” The officer's voice, which had initially been filled with hesitation, finally became certain.
- “I see!” Jeremy had a hunch that it must have taken an offender of such gravity to draw the attention of a big shot like Zachariah.
- The two hurriedly arrived at the door, but Maverick had already disappeared without a trace.
- “Where's Mr. Wozniak?” asked Jeremy.
- A subordinate reported, “Chief Fuson, Mr. Wozniak rushed off to the interrogation room as soon as he arrived.”
- Accompanied by a beauty and burdened with heavy chains was the situation Finneas found himself in at that time.
- Having witnessed Finneas' skills and seemingly magical abilities, Roxanne dared not take him lightly.
- Therefore, she not only handcuffed Finneas with three sets of cuffs but also somehow managed to find two leg irons to put on him.
- Even so, Roxanne still felt uneasy in her heart.
- She dismissed the other officers, leaving her alone with a pistol in hand. She fixed her gaze intently on Finneas as she began the interrogation.
- “Speak up. Who are you? What's your name? Where do you live? And why did you kill?” Roxanne feigned a fierce tone as she spoke.
- Unexpectedly, Finneas merely gave her a nonchalant glance. “In ten minutes, everything will become clear.”
- Bang!
- Roxanne suddenly slammed the table, her voice icy as she warned, “Don't try to fool me. Speak honestly and clearly. Perhaps it might save you some trouble.”
- Finneas remained silent.
- Such interrogation methods, he had stopped using them eight years ago.
- “You...” Roxanne was instantly infuriated when she saw that Finneas was unfazed.
- She abruptly raised her gun, aiming it at Finneas' head, and said, “If you don't talk, do you believe I'll blow your head off with one shot?”
- Upon hearing those words, Finneas scowled. A cold glint flashed in his eyes, as sharp as a blade, landing on Roxanne's face. He spoke in a measured tone. “You're welcome to try!”
- Upon hearing those words, Roxanne couldn't help but shudder, her hand gripping the gun began to tremble. Such a terrifying gaze. Who exactly is he?
- Roxanne was lost in a whirlwind of thoughts, an unexpected fear blossoming in her heart. It felt like she wasn't facing a mere “suspect” but a terrifying beast.
- Just as she was at a loss, there was a loud bang. Maverick barged through the door.
- At a single glance, he immediately noticed Finneas' condition, his heart filled with sudden dread. What a disaster. What should I do now? How can I possibly resolve this?
- Yesterday, he had accompanied Zachariah to the Quimby family's birthday celebration, where he had the unfortunate chance to witness Finneas' terrifying influence. On their way back, Zachariah repeatedly cautioned him, emphasizing that under no circumstances should he offend Finneas.
- Yet, a mere police officer had managed to apprehend that formidable figure, even treating him in such a way, which was not good.
- “Mr. Wozniak, this person is very dangerous. Please, you need to leave here quickly.” Roxanne stood up, gritting her teeth as she spoke.
- “Where are the keys?” Maverick wasn't really listening to what Roxanne was saying.
- At that moment, all he wanted was to quickly quell Finneas' anger.
- Roxanne was somewhat taken aback, her delicate eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “Mr. Wozniak, what key are you talking about?”
- “The keys to the interrogation room, the keys to the handcuffs and shackles he wore,” Maverick blurted out.
- “Mr. Wozniak, this isn't protocol. This man is a ruthless murderer.”
- Upon hearing those words, Maverick was on the verge of kneeling before Roxanne. Protocol? Do you even know who you apprehended?
- Maverick, disregarding everything else, sternly commanded, “This is an order!”
- The fury of a top-ranking city official should have been earth-shattering for a police officer like Roxanne.
- However, Roxanne remained completely unruffled, instead she retorted, “I'm sorry, Mr. Wozniak. I cannot comply with your orders if you're going to interfere with the judicial process.”
- “You...” Maverick pointed at Roxanne, trembling with rage all over.
- However, seeing her utterly fearless expression, he eventually refrained from continuing his threats.
- “Mr. Wozniak, the officer did nothing wrong. You should refrain from blaming her.” Suddenly, Finneas began to speak.
- Maverick was sweating profusely, managing to force a hint of a smile onto his face. He said, “Yes, yes, you are absolutely correct, Mr. Lockwood.”
- Roxanne was somewhat taken aback. Could it be that this murderer had suddenly developed a conscience? Why else would he be speaking in my favor?
- However, when she saw Finneas' nonchalant demeanor, she immediately discarded her own assumptions. Him, having a change of heart? Are there really people in this world who suddenly grow a conscience?
- “Oh my, Mr. Wozniak, you're quite the VIP. What brings you here today?” At that moment, Jeremy rushed into the detention room in a state of great agitation.
- “Chief Fuson, I'm taking this person with me. You should explain it to your subordinate, Captain Thurman,” said Maverick.
- “You're taking this person away?” Jeremy's expression subtly shifted.
- He had meticulously studied Finneas' actions over the past few days during their journey. A person as dangerous as this, and Maverick actually intended to take him away? What was going on?
- “That... might not be a good idea,” Jeremy gently objected.
- Maverick swiftly pulled Jeremy aside, beginning to murmur in hushed tones.
- Roxanne had been watching the two of them the whole time. She noticed Jeremy's expression gradually becoming more serious. Unable to contain her curiosity, she turned her gaze toward Finneas. However, all she saw was Finneas' usual carefree demeanor.
- Who is he, really? Could he be a relative of Zachariah? Or did he have some other background? With those thoughts in mind, a hint of distaste appeared on Roxanne's face.
- “Roxanne, let him go.” At last, Jeremy spoke, his face still held a trace of shock.
- Yet, he no longer dared to meet Finneas' gaze.
- Roxanne could disregard the orders from Maverick, but she couldn't afford to ignore the directives from her immediate superior.
- “Chief Fuson, he's a murderer!” Roxanne still wanted to put up a fight.
- However, Jeremy's expression had already darkened. “This is an order!”
- Tears had already welled up in Roxanne's eyes.
- She remained still, guided by her own steadfast beliefs and principles.
- The situation suddenly became a bit awkward.
- A flicker of reluctance seemed to pass through Jeremy's eyes. However, upon seeing Finneas' expression, he finally mustered a stern voice and commanded, “Release this gentleman at once. Let Mr. Wozniak escort him out.”
- “If you want me to release him, you must provide a reason. This is a police station, not a marketplace,” argued Rexanne.
- The group was still caught up in endless arguments when suddenly, vibrations began to emanate from the ground.
- Jeremy's expression shifted subtly. He quickly turned to the officer standing guard at the door and began to ask questions. “What's going on?”
- The guard answered, “Chief Fuson, several large vehicles suddenly pulled up outside. Numerous fully armed soldiers disembarked and they're heading this way right now.”
