Chapter 6 She Saw A Pair Of Legs
- But no matter how much she screamed, the guards pretended not to hear her.
- “Help!” Charlotte could feel her heart bursting out of her chest. An eerie chill ran down her spine when she felt like countless eyes were watching her, and sweat poured from her forehead.
- But no matter how she yanked at the handle, the door wouldn't open. At that moment, she was on the verge of breaking down. Locked in a dark room with nothing but memorial tablets around her, even her breathing sounded loud.
- Left with no choice, she slowly turned around and stared at the tablets fearfully with her back against the door. She had goosebumps all over by then.
- Putting her hands together, she begged in a trembling voice, “I-I didn't mean to disturb your rest, ancestors of the Bennett family. Please don't haunt me.”
- The silence was her answer, accompanied by nothing but the crackling of the candle.
- Charlotte felt her heart racing faster than it ever did, but she resolved herself and knelt before the tablets with a cushion under her knees.
- “I-I know what I did was wrong, sirs and madams. But I didn't cheat on purpose. I was drunk, a-and for some reason, I ended up sleeping with someone else.
- “But my dad sold me to your family against my will. I heard Mr. Bennett's an ugly old git, and he's also crippled. I'm sorry, but you can't force a young lady like me to bear his children, can you? So please just let me off the hook. I beg you.”
- She banged her head against the floor a few times.
- “I'm sorry. I didn't mean it, but nothing can be changed now. Mrs. Bennett or Eleanor, as you guys might call her, made me kneel before you as my punishment. Will she let me off if you guys forgive me?”
- Charlotte rambled on while begging for her life, trying to chase the fear within her away. But nobody could grant her the forgiveness she sought for. Well, if someone actually did that, she might just die of shock.
- Getting thrown into someone's ancestral hall and forced to come face to face with the tablets in there would scare anyone, even if it wasn't haunted.
- Charlotte gulped again, fear taking over her. She wanted to escape, but the whole place was sealed, so all she could do was stay put and hope she didn't offend any spirits.
- Her hair stood on end as she scanned her surroundings. What if I see something?
- For some inexplicable reason, she kept feeling that there were eyes on her.
- She had to look around again to confirm that nothing was there before she heaved a sigh of relief. “I was only imagining things. Phew...”
- She patted her chest while she comforted herself.
- It's daytime now, so there's no ghost here.
- That boosted her courage a little, and she switched from kneeling to sitting. The thousands of tablets were a terrifying sight, but at least she wasn't as scared as she was before.
- She then started observing them closely but with respect.
- Seeing the two tablets in front that looked new, she frowned. Could these be the tablets of that pervert's parents?
- “Oh, sorry, sorry. Please forgive me. I didn't mean it.”
- She mumbled something and looked around helplessly, puckering her lips. Her legs were still hurting, and getting thrown into the hall almost traumatized her.
- It was sad enough that her father sold her to the Bennetts so that she could bear Mr. Bennett's child. To add insult to injury, she lost her virginity after a gathering and was exposed.
- Hey, wait a minute. Something's off.
- She had some experience getting drunk before, but the night before did not make sense. She felt lust welling up within her and badly wanted to let it all out. It was as if logic was thrown out the window when she crazily sought out sex.
- Holy crap! I was drugged!
- At that thought, her eyes widened in fury.
- Sh*t. It must have been Wendy. She gave me that fruit wine last night and told me it isn't strong.
- Moreover, she was in a bad mood at that time because her father sold her, so she drank it without hesitation.
- “You're getting it, Wendy!” she roared with her hands clenched into fists. A hint of scarlet showed up on her face, livening her up a bit.
- But she had to thank Wendy as well. At least Charlotte inadvertently slept with an almost illegally handsome man instead of an old git. That averted the crisis of having to give her virginity to Mr. Bennett.
- At least that's a win.
- Even so, walking straight into such a nasty trap didn't sit well with Charlotte.
- There was also the fact that the magazines printed the photos and sent them to Eleanor before she could even come back that morning.
- Someone is sabotaging me, but who? What are they trying to do? Could it be Wendy too? But not many people know that I was sold to the Bennetts. Or does she have accomplices?
- Charlotte's face fell.
- I'm going to find who the culprit is no matter what. Ain't no way I'm taking this. Just you wait. You're not going to get away with this.
- But when she took a look at her surroundings, her anger was doused.
- Damn this place. I would have run away if not for the fact that the Bennetts would hunt me down. As if I would come back here.
- The Bennett family was very powerful, especially their legendary member, Mr. Bennett, who was a cold and inhumane man. Anyone who crossed him would end up dead or worse.
- I wonder if I can even live now that I slept with another man.
- “Sorry, Mr. Bennett. I didn't do it on purpose. Please have mercy on me,” Charlotte apologized sincerely, even though she knew he couldn't hear her.
- At that moment, someone chuckled, prompting Charlotte to scream in fear. “Who's there?”
- When she scanned the hall in panic but saw nothing, a chill crept down her spine.
- Oh, sh*t. Is this place really haunted?
- “Who's there? Come out!” she barked, but nobody responded.
- Unbeknownst to her, two figures were standing around the window. They could see her, but she couldn't see them.
- The tall, sturdy man was glaring at his chuckling assistant while the said assistant covered his mouth, trying to hold his laughter in. His face reddened as he didn't even dare to take a breath.
- When he noticed his boss' murderous glare, the assistant left in a flash, not having the courage to stay any longer.
- When a figure flashed past her, Charlotte felt her blood rushing to her brain, and everything went dark. But before she fell, she saw a pair of legs.
- “G-G-G-Ghost...”
