• June said she left a message for Dad and let 911 know what was going on. As expected, the 911 operator told us it was impossible to get help till the storm had passed. We gathered in the family room away from the non-boarded up windows. We brought plenty of bed clothes, as nobody was going to sleep in any of the bedrooms with their exposed windows and sliding glass doors. We found a few candles, a flashlight (+2 spare batteries), and one battery-operated hurricane lamp.
• The wind was really loud now. I could hear the surf under the house. If the storm surge was under 10 feet, we'd be OK. Well, as long as the water didn't erode the stilts and the wind didn't remove our roof. Or blow us over.
• We ended up on the sofa, blankets over us. George crawled under the sofa, wanting no part of the storm. I looked under at him and his eyes were wide. Don't think I ever saw him afraid before. Looked at the girls: they were both wide-eyed as well. Their glasses magnified their concern in the flickering light. Didn't want to look in the mirror, either.
